What is graffiti?

Graffiti is when someone

marks someone else's property

without their permission.

For example, someone spray paints their name, tag or a picture on something that is not their property. The owner of the property has not said it is OK to do so. cityofgoldcoast.com.au/graffiti

Hi Katrina and Chantal, I have only spread out the text and made the example text a little larger for easy comprehension. I like the red permission and the example.

Yes I understand what you mean but this sketch is not in keeping with your other terrific pictures. Could we get a photo of someone from behind with a hoodie on? Would that say what your want? Is it possible to get a photo like this? This is just what I found through google. We really need a picture appropriate for primary school kids. We might be able to get a graphic artist here to draw one. It’s a bit beyond me.

I think the words “The consequences…” adds more depth to the slide. I had to rearrange the circles a little to accommodate the extra words.

Slide 9

Graffiti is a crime Graffiti is illegal in Australia.

» Any person who wilfully and unlawfully destroys or damages any property is guilty of an offence. (1) If the property in question is in a public place, or is visible from a public place, and the destruction or damage is caused by (a) spraying, writing, drawing, marking or otherwise applying paint or another marking substance; or (b) scratching or etching; the offender commits a crime and is liable to imprisonment for 7 years. (3) The court may order the offender to perform community service, including for example, removing graffiti from property; and/or may order the offender to pay compensation to any person

Consequences for graffiti offenders

• Offenders may be sentenced to a Graffiti Removal Order, a period of probation or a term in a detention centre/jail (note: a person aged 17 or over is tried as an adult).

• Offenders may gain a criminal record which means they may not be able to travel or get employment in some fields.

Graffiti costs money $$$

cityofgoldcoast.com.au/graffiti

• Removing graffiti costs millions of dollars every year.

• To prevent graffiti, governments, businesses and communities spend money to change environments, run programs and educate the community. These strategies aim to reduce the likelihood of graffiti occurring.

• Graffiti offenders, cost money. They take up police time, as well as court and jail costs.

Consequences for graffiti offenders

• A graffiti offender may be ordered to pay a fine and compensation to the owner of the property that was vandalised.

Slide 11

Graffiti damages communities • People feel unsafe when their area has graffiti. • Graffiti damages public spaces and community facilities. • Graffiti can flow on to other types of crime. • When graffiti is not removed, it can imply that community, business or the local City does

not care about or respect a space.

Consequences for graffiti offenders

• Graffiti offenders may be ordered to perform community service to clean up graffiti.

Wouldn’t it be great to have little business cards to give to people with these details. I don’t think it will be “cool” to put these numbers into their phones there and then. If budget permits, why not? Red text like your slide number 2

Slide 14

Remove it The City of Gold Coast:

• spends over $1 million every year removing graffiti

• responds to 10,000 graffiti reports each year

• has full-time painters removing graffiti

• uses paint, water and chemicals to remove graffiti.
