WEEK TWOSeptember 9-13

1. Stricken

◦If you are stricken with something, you are suffering from it.

2. Torrent

A torrent is a large amount of fast and furiously flowing water

3. Rapt

◦If you are rapt, something amazes you and captures your attention.

4. PreoccupiedWhen you’re preoccupied with something, you are thinking about it so much that you don’t notice other things.

5. PossessIf you possess something, you own it and control it

6. Expanse

◦An expanse is a wide, open area.

7. Retaliate

When you retaliate, you get revenge for something that someone has done to you

◦Someone who ameliorates a situation makes it better or easier

When you capitulate, you give up and surrender

◦Furtive people are secretive and sneaky because they are trying to hide what they are doing.

1. mainstay

A mainstay is the most important part of something, the part that supports everything else.

2. odyssey

An odyssey is a long, eventful journey

3. grueling

A grueling experience is so difficult it exhausts you.

4. scour

When you scour something, you scrub it in order to clean it.

5. hierarchy

A hierarchy is a way of ranking group members based on their importance.

6. integral

Something that is an integral part of something else is absolutely necessary for it to work

7. regale

If you regale someone, you entertain him or her with stories.

8. pan

If you pan an area, you look slowly across it from side to side.

9. deference

When you show deference, you act in a way that shows a deep respect for someone or something.

10. epitome

The epitome of something is the best example or model of it.

1. Supple

Something that is supple is soft and bends easily.

2. Disregard

◦If you disregard something, you decide that it is not worth paying attention to.

3. Gnarled

◦Something that is gnarled is wrinkled and twisted, usually because it is old.

4. Wan

◦People who look wan look pale because they are weak or worn out

5. Muse

◦When you muse about something, you think about it deeply.

6. Explicit

◦Something that is explicit is explained so clearly that it can’t possibly be misunderstood.

7. Nostalgic

◦When you feel nostalgic, you remember a happier time in the past.

8. Somber

When you are somber, you feel sad and gloomy.

9. Congregate

◦When people congregate, they come together in a group.

10. Postulate

◦When you postulate something, you make an educated guess that it’s true.

1. CompensateWhen you compensate someone, you try to make up for something lost or stolen

2. Devotion

Devotion is a deep love and admiration for someone or something.

3. Presumptuous

If you are presumptuous, you decide that you have the right to do things that are none of your business.

4. Utter

When you utter a word or sound, you say it.

5. Oblige

If you oblige someone, you do something for that person because you want to, not because you have to.

6. Reproach

When you reproach someone, you criticize that person for doing something wrong.

7. Abate

If something abates, it becomes less intense or widespread

8. Prudence

When you show prudence, you plan things carefully and wisely.

9. Enamored

When you are enamored with someone, you are fascinated by or in love with that person.

10. Chagrin

Chagrin is a feeling of embarrassment because you failed.

Lesson 7October 7-11

1. unwieldy

Something that is unweildly is hard to handle because of its awkward weight or size.

2. redolent

If something is redolent of something else, it reminds you of that thing.

3. taunt

A person who taunts you annoys or teases you in order to be hurtful.

4. mellifluous (muh LIHF lu uhs)

Something that sounds mellifluous sounds pleasant and smooth.

5. implication

An implication is the unspoken meaning or message behind what you say or do.

6. meager

When there is a meager amount of something, there is very little of it.

7. embolden

If you feel emboldened by something, you suddenly have the confidence to act boldly and bravely.

8. obliterate

When you obliterate something, you completely destroy it.

9. egregious (eh GREE juhs)

An egregious act is shockingly bad.

10. abashed

If you are abashed, you feel ashamed and embarrased.
