Grade 11 and 12 Pathways at ABA

University entrance Entry policies vary around the world. Careful research must be conducted

•All 3 ABA Pathways can lead to higher education

•IB Diploma points to note

• IB Diploma is a requirement for direct university entry in many countries

• IB Diploma is preferred in some countries but not always required

• The IB Diploma is a highly desirable academic qualification in the United States and UK, but not required for admission.

Choosing the right pathway

Choose a pathway in which you will be successful.

Taking a course does not get a student into a university . Being successful in a course is what universities are looking for.

ABA US High School Diploma Requirements

(Grades 9-12)

Successful completion of CAS

English – 4 credits

Mathematics – 3 or 4 credits*

Science – 3 or 4 credits*

Individuals & Societies– 3 credits

Language Acquisition – 2 credits (in the same language)

Research Project – 1 credit (a 3 or better on the Personal Project meets this requirement)

Creative Arts – 1 credit

Physical Education – 1 credit

Electives – 6 credits

0.5 credits earned for attaining a Level 3 or higher on Semester Reports

Grade Point Average GPA shows how well the credits were earned e.g. 7’s or ’s

*students must complete 4 credits in either Mathematics or Science

25 Total credits must be earned in Grades 9-12 (30 available)

The IB Diploma Model

ABA courses in G11-12 all follow IB Syllabi

Students may enter for individual IB subjects

Students may study 6 subjects at Standard Level

CAS required

IB Courses results are all recorded on one certificate

CAS requirements have not been met.

Candidate’s total points are fewer than . An N has been given for theory of knowledge, extended essay or for a

contributing subject.

A grade E has been awarded for one or both of theory of knowledge and the extended essay.

There is a grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.

Grade 2 has been awarded three or more times (HL or SL).

Grade 3 or below has been awarded four or more times (HL or SL).

Candidate has gained fewer than 12 points on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count).

Candidate has gained fewer than 9 points on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL).

Group 1: Language & Literature

All Students must select one of:

English A: Literature (HL and SL)

English A: Language & Literature (HL and SL)

Group 2: Language Acquisition

All Students must select one of:

Arabic A: Language & Literature (HL and SL)*

Arabic B (HL and SL)

French B (HL and SL)

Spanish B (HL and SL)

OR with approval from the IB coordinator students opt to study a different language at their own expense.

Spanish ab initio is only available to students not currently studying a language at ABA

*Students with 2 Language A subjects qualify for a Bilingual IB Diploma

Group 3: Individuals & Societies

All Students must select one of:

Business Management (HL and SL)

Economics (HL and SL)

Geography (HL and SL)

History (HL and SL)

*Environmental Systems & Societies (SL only)

* Environmental Systems & Societies is an interdisciplinary subject. It can count as either a group 3 or a group 4 course, or as both.

Group 4: Sciences

All Students must select one of:

Biology (HL and SL)

Chemistry (HL and SL)

Physics (HL and SL)

*Environmental Systems & Societies (SL only)

*Computer Science (with a caveat)

* Environmental Systems & Societies is an interdisciplinary subject. It can count as either a group 3 or a group 4 course, or as both.

All Students must select one of:

*determined by placement criteria

Visual Arts (HL and SL)

2-4 lessons per week

Health-related aspects of physical fitness

Opportunities to acquire knowledge of and experience various personal fitness improvement methods.

Designed for students who wish to pursue more specific types of activities promoting a physically active and healthy lifestyle.

Participation based with a primary focus of continued activity.

Expectation to exercise vigorously and work to improve personal fitness whilst displaying leadership and initiative.

Deadline

The ABA US High School Diploma alone or with the addition of IB Certificates or the IB Diploma all open doors to university – but be aware of individual university requirements !

It is important to choose a pathway in which you will be successful.
