What was the problem / challenge that Qualcomm was facing and why?

Updating the www.qualcomm.com website for Drupal 7 and making it multilingual. Mirum built the Qualcomm site using a unique architecture called PODS. PODS allow site admins to customize the fields and theme used on a page via a drag-and-drop interface. They are very powerful and provide a lot of flexibility and efficiency, but PODS were not able to be translated using Drupal's core multilingual functionality. This prevented the Qualcomm site from being translated since PODS were used extensively.

What solution was implemented?

Drupal 7 with Lingotek Translation Module Drupal integration. Lingotek and Mirum worked together extensively to add support for PODS translation. Lingotek enhanced its module to allow custom entities, such as PODS, to be handled via code-level hooks. Mirum implemented logic to pass PODS content to Lingotek and store the translations properly in the database. The end result was a seamless translation experience for site admins and translators. The PODS content was uploaded for translation along with all the associated content for a given page, translated via the Lingotek TMS, then downloaded back to Drupal.

What are some lessons learned?

Trying to manually manage the localization of a Drupal website is very time consuming, costly, and error prone.  Using Lingotek automation released an FTE to work on other projects, reduced cost and improved quality and time to market. Drupal's extensible architecture allows for incredible customization and flexibility. Digital agencies and module maintainers can work together to create powerful, customized experiences for site builders and end users.
