Glommersträsk village:300 inhabitants, wood industry and services. Old farming land.

Glommers Miljöenergi AB, The company GME was founded in 1996 to create new jobs based on the refinement of locally produced biofuels.

Stockholm

Glommersträsk

Since 1998 – the school, church and sport centre is fuelled by wood chips furnance.

From september 2010 a heater adopted for burning straw is fuelled by locally produced Reed Canary Grass to heat up a block of flats and the Fire station.

Since 1997 there has been ongoing collaborative development projects, in the last years as Bioenergi Nord.

GME’s line of production, wood pellets:

GME’s line of production, Reed Canary Grass:

Glommers Miljöenergi AB, GME, was founded in 1996 to create new jobs based on the refinement of locally produced biofuels.

•Work is performed in co-operation with researchers and scientists from universities, colleges and biofuel organisations.• GME has the competence and equipment to pellet different raw materials andmixtures• We perform the measuring of:– Moisture content– Ash content– Durability– Bulk weight• We offer visits and information to schools etc. about biofuels.

GME Biofuel Test Station

District Heating I : GME are providing the School, Church, Ice rink, Old people’s house with heating using wood chips.

District Heating II: Project for the Swedish Board of Agriculture. Heating a block of flats with Canary Reed Grass briquetts burned in a 60 kW Catfire stove specialised for difficult raw material

GME offer knowledge transfer about Lifecycle-based Bioenergyand extended production of Reed Canary Grass

Our market today: • Biofuel Test Station: Primarily universities and colleges. We provide testing of different pellet and briquett materials and mixes in large scale, real environment. • District Heating: Local customers, including the municipality. Wood chips/Reed Canary Grass• Wood pellets: Private and Corporate customers in Sweden and Norway. Bulk, big bags or small bags.

GME collaborate with municipalities and the industry in the development of bioenergy:

1. KAB – An inventory of the biofuel potential of the local district (1997-1999).

2. Reed Canary Grass – Energy grass cultivation on peat soil land in collaboration with the Swedish Agricultural University.

3. Marketing and information to the public about biofuel pellets.

4. Inventory of the ash and sludge quantaties of Northern Sweden (for possible use as a fertilizer)

5. The construction of a Biofuel Test Station

6. Inventory and analysis of commercial use of White Hardwood (2005-2007)

7. Lifecycle-based bioenergy in Cold Climate (2006-2008)

GME in collaboration with Arvidsjaur kommun completed seven biofuel projects 1997-2008: (you can find all project reports on www.bioenerginord.com )

Tonnes of municipal sludge and ash

Norr- och Västerbottens län, Northern Sweden

In the areas Norrbotten and Västerbotten there are around 80 000 ha disused farm land that could be suitable for energy production.

In 2001 GME made a study of the amounts of municipal sludge and ash that are produced in this area and compared it with the amount of disused farmland.

The quality of ash and sludge was not investigated in this study but a large amount of the ash comes from wood burners.

Current project Local Growth – Energy: Arvidsjaurs kommun - Mwanga District Tanzania. GME is engaged as Bioenergy Expert. Currently waiting for test results for a local grass.

Problem DescriptionEnergy distribution is, despite of enormous amounts of solar energy and at times very good conditions for wind energy, a very large obstacle in the development of Tanzania and Mwanga District. Lack of energy, in addition to technical barriers and general problems, creates deforestation of solid fuel and illegal logging in order to produce coal which is sold in urban areas. In addition, there is no reforestation leading to high erosion damages etc. in the nature.

ObjectivesThe objective of the project is to give knowledge, technology and entrepreneurship to local enterprises and cooperatives in how to produce efficient and profitable briquettes out of existing plant fibers.

Expected ResultsEnterprise/cooperative which successfully have adopted the technology and knowledge of how to efficiently produce briquettes, acting as raw model in Mwanga District and Kilimanjaro Regions. The long-term objective is to develop a new business area.

The long term goal of this project is to create profitability for the production and use of the energy grass RCG as a biofuel so that small scale biofuel production can grow and disused farmland will be taken into production.

In a wider perspective the project goals are to contribute to creating new jobs, preserve cultivated landscape in forest regions, contribute to making fossile energy redundant and being a resource for a lifecycle based reintroduction of society’s waste products such as ash used as fertiliser.

Current project RCG for small scale heating systems in sparsely populated areas –

A demonstration and development project for Reed Canary Grass cultivation on peat soil, mobile briquetting with screw technique and heating production in bottom fed furnace.
