Glassware Identification

Beaker

• General purpose glassware

• Used to mix solutions, transport chemicals

• Heat chemicals at relatively low temperatures

Erlenmeyer Flask

• Also general purpose glassware• Functions same as beaker• The sloped sides make it good at mixing/swirling

liquids

Volumetric Flask

• Used when making solutions

• Very precise volume measurements

Wire Mesh

• Used to support glassware on the ringstand

• Disperses heat

Test tube

• Transport liquids or solids

• Can easily examine contents

Goggles

• Must be worn at all times when in the lab

• Most important safety item

Test tube rack

• Supports test tubes

• Warning: hot test tubes will melt it.

Graduated Cylinder

• Accurately measures liquid volumes

• 100mL and 10mL

Watch glass

• Use to slowly and gently evaporate liquids

• Can be used as a lid for beakers

Rubber Stopper

• Used as a “lid” for flasks and test tubes

Scoopula

• Transfer solids, scoop chemicals

Glass Stirring rod

• Duh!

Evaporating dish

• Heats or evaporates liquids at low temperatures

Crucible and lid

• Heat solids to high temperatures

• Very Fragile

• Never put liquids into hot crucible

Clay Triangle

• Supports crucible when being heated

pipet

• Transfer small, precise amounts of liquids

Eye dropper

• Similar function to pipet

Crucible Tong

• Designed to pick up a crucible

Beaker Tong

• Designed to pick up a beaker

Test tube clamp

• Duh!

Utility Clamp

• Used to support a test tube specifically, or any glassware

Ring Stand

• Used to support various clamps

Iron Ring

• Supports clay triangle and wire mesh

Electronic Balance

• Accurately measures mass to .001 g

Hot Plate

• Used to heat substances at low temperatures

Bunsen burner

• High temperature heat source

Cleaning Brushes

• Flask brush

• Beaker brush

• Test tube brush

• Graduated cylinder brush

Well plate

• Used to observe small scale chemical reactions

Mortar and pestel

• Grinding solids

Distilled Water Bottle

• Some labs require the use of pure water (H2O)

• Do not use unless it is specified in the lab
