SEPTEMBER 2018
GFWC MORROW CIVIC WOMAN’S CLUB NEWSLETTER Check us out at http://mcwcga.org/
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Dear Club Sisters, This past weekend, six of our club sisters, Peggy W, Mary, Lois, Renee, Cookie, Lorelei, and me attended Institute in Athens. The format this year was quite different from those in previous years. The Marketplace was full of many decorative booths that contain freebies and handouts of information pertaining to many projects for various community service programs plus several committees. Some of the booths had hands-on activities for the club members to do. Conservation, led by Mary, demonstrated the making of phlarn. The Arts had us make a flower out of plastic spoons and to add our special touch to a painting. I received some new information about some previous projects and also some information about projects that we may consider doing. The event was well planned and very informative. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope that next year, more club sisters will plan to attend. The GFWC Georgia Central West District meeting is just around the corner. The registration form plus a $25.00 check is due to me by Friday, September 1st. Also, we have been asked to bring a Dr. Seuss book to the meeting. Since we are one of the host clubs for the meeting, I hope that you are making plans to attend. Please remember Bunco Night on Tuesday, September 11th, starting at 6:00 pm. Please invite some prospective members. Hope to see you at the September meeting. Angelia
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS
ARTS
Details of the latest opportunities to enjoy the arts in our area can be found on the last pages of the newsletter so that you can easily remove it for reference during the month.
Remember the hours you spend on your art, crafts, volunteering at shows, supporting local arts performances, choir practice, visiting art shows, photography, editing, and mounting can be placed on the list of art hours.
CONSERVATION
As the Correspondence Secretary finishes the newsletter, she would like to thank all of the ladies and their families for their consideration of our environment. Thanks for all you do! It is inspirational!!! More on Conservation will be discussed at the meeting.

EDUCATION
(1) Thanks again for the support we received in your donations of school supplies. Y'all were so generous and I am sure the students and staff at Huie were pleased as were the people at Haven House. (2) Bring gently used books for the book swap and we also need children's books for Huie. (3) We are no longer collecting empty computer ink cartridges. (4)Please remember to record all the things you do for education on the sheet this month.
HOME LIFE
Many, many thanks to all club members who made contributions of cookies and deviled eggs for the Tomato Sandwich Party fundraiser for the Good Shepherd Clinic. The event was a great success, and MCWC’s efforts were very much appreciated. Thank you, club members who helped, prepare and serve the dinner for Calvary Refuge Center. The meal was delicious, and the residents enjoyed it. Please be mindful of on-going collections each month: eyeglasses, pop-tops, food pantry donations, and calendars.

PUBLIC ISSUES
RAILROAD SAFETY
Railroad safety is not something we talk about much but too often, someone is killed or badly injured because they did no use safety precautions at railroad crossings or around railroad tracks. A train is too heavy to stop quickly. The average freight train traveling 55 miles per hour takes a mile or more to stop. Some reminders that we already know, but it seems we ignore. LOOK BOTH WAYS. Always expect a train. DON’T GET STUCK ON A TRACK! Before you cross, be sure there is room on the other side to completely clear the tracks. Trains overhang the tracks by at least three feet. GET OUT OF THE WAY!! If your car stalls at a crossing, get everyone out and far away immediately. IF YOU SEE A TRAIN COMING WAIT! An approaching train may be closer and traveling faster than it appears.
Special Project: Women’s History Resource Center (WHRC) Wahoo! Scanning of our club’s scrapbooks resumes this month! It has been several weeks since we last visited the CSU Archives. Oh, my! Will we recall what to do? Thankfully, we have Feechi to assist us! Please consider helping with the archiving process on the following dates: Monday, September 17, 10 am – 2 pm Tuesday, September 18, 10 am – 2 pm
