CuLTuRAL AND COmmuNITY CENTERWITH CONNECTED HOuSINGFOR THE ELDERLY
Sponging is a community center in the Reykjavik suburbs with existing retail and basic services. The need for a cultural and community center is met with the new development.
The center will house various activities of the city municipal, such as a city library, the community center miðgarður, the association of the elderly, in addition to a cafeteria, meeting hall and outside area for cultural activities. The church and the police will also be situated in the house. Various services for the elderly will also be housed on the 2nd floor of the building.
The housing for the elderly is connected to the service center and includes an indoor connection that runs through the housing development.
The planning concept of the housing area is to create a unified, low rise building complex with sheltered gardens and indoor connection to all services for the elderly. This is possible with the “snake” like structure that bends back and forth to create pockets of garden area.
The buildings step up and down from 1-4 floors allowing maximum sunlight to the garden area as well as opportunity for roof top gardens.
