AUREL VLAICU

(1882-1913)

Our school bears the name of Aurel Vlaicu, the pioneer of Romanian aviation and the district of Arad in which the school is located.

The school celebrated its twenty-seventh anniversary at the beginning of June 2009. from the outset, we aimed to provide a multicultural environment offering education in three mother tongues, viz. Romanian, Hungarian and German. At the moment, the school has approximately 950 pupils aged 6-14.

For the past twenty-seven years, the school curriculum has been directed towards meeting the needs of community. One of the main objectives of the school is the development of pupils’ communication skills. To achieve excellence in communication is a top of priority for us, especially as we are the only school in the County of Arad to bring together the three ethnic groups. Further, we are aware of the importance of communication skills to an effective European integration, and we have this very much in designing our information technology programme.

Computers skills is an optional subject within the school curriculum and includes the editing of the school magazine “PRO Vlaicu”. The magazine is published quarterly and covers the life of the school in general, from the thoughts, opinions and achievements of pupils and staff to their hopes and plans for the future.

Since 1999, the rationale of the school has developed beyond normal expectations through the use of our 5-year project called “My school – My life Enviroment”, which ended in June 2004. The new project – “Aurel Vlaicu” School, Arad – a living community – was launched in September 2004. Indeed, the school’s general use of project-based activities has assured us of a place on various international programmes and projects. We are currently involved with: The charity “Together We Care”, from Kirkby Lonsdale,

England, which started in 1993; Universities from Scotland as part of the SCROLL

Programme from 1996; Romanian schools from Hungary as part of programme

initiated by our local Inspectorate; The “Character First” Programme, from 2002; Testvérvárosok Terei Általános Iskola – a school from

Pécs, Hungary from May 2004; The Empoigne Association from Rennes, France as part

ot education project called “French Through Songs”, initiated by AMFIRAN Association;

In planning to achieve the very best academic standards, the school management team recognizes the uniqueness of each pupils and will always seek to respond to individual needs.
