Visitor’s Guide
Founded by Alfred Heber Holbrook in 1945, the
Georgia Museum of Art has long offered its audiences
a world-class art experience. As both an academic
museum and the state’s official art museum, it serves not
only the University of Georgia population, but also the owners
of its permanent collection—the citizens of Georgia—through
award-winning exhibitions, publications and programming.
In 1996, the museum moved to the Performing and Visual
Arts Complex on UGA’s East Campus. A 16,000-square-foot
expansion of the galleries by Gluckman Mayner Architects
(New York), completed in 2011, allows for continual display
of works from the museum’s permanent collection, many of
which were part of Holbrook’s original gift. The experience
continues in the Jane and Harry Willson Sculpture Garden,
which is dedicated to the display of works by women artists
and provides visitors with a quiet spot to visit, eat lunch
or meditate.
To this day, the museum strives to fulfill Holbrook’s
legacy and to provide Art for Everyone.
