What do you think genes are?
GenesA section of DNA that has information about a specific trait of an organism

What is a trait?A trait is a genetically determined
characteristic
What is Heredity?
What is Heredity? The passing on of characteristics genetically
from one generation to another.

Gregor Mendel Gregor Mendel was the first person known to record evidence that traits of organisms are determined by factors passed from parents to offspring. Born in 1822 in Europe Father of Genetics
Mendel studied genetics by conducting breeding experiments with pea plants.

Dominant Traits
Dominant TraitsThe stronger trait, the trait that will be expressed.
Recessive Traits
Genetics Notes 1024.notebook
8
Recessive TraitsThe weaker trait, will not be expressed if a dominant trait is present.
Allele
Allele2 alleles make up a gene
Every gene has 2 alleles
Genetics Notes 1024.notebook
9
PhenotypeThe visible traits and characteristics of an organism
GenotypeThe alleles of all the genes on an organism's chromosomes
Uppercase letters represent dominant alleles
Lowercase letters represent recessive alleles
EeAlleles for eye color
Allele for brown eyes (dominant) Allele for blue eyes (recessive)

Homo means the same
Hetero means different
Genetics Notes 1024.notebook
11
Homozygous: two alleles have the same information
Heterozygous: two alleles have different information
The genotype contains 2 alleles, one from mom and one from dad. These alleles can be either dominant or recessive. If there are one or more dominant alleles present, then the phenotype will be representative of the dominant. If there are no dominant alleles present, then the phenotype will take on the recessive feature. The combination of genotype alleles determine the phenotype

In seals, the gene for the length of whiskers has two alleles. The dominant allele (W) codes for long whiskers and the recessive allele (w) codes for short whiskers.
What is the probability of producing offspring that have short whiskers from two longwhiskered seals? One seal is homozygous dominant and the other is heterozygous.
________% long whiskers
________% short whiskers
Tonguerolling is a dominant trait (R). Mr. Saephanh can roll his tongue, but his sister, May, cannot.
1. What alleles must May have? ___________________________
2. What possible alleles can Mr. Saephanh have _______________
3. In order to show recessive traits, a living thing must have 2 (RR
or rr)? _____________________________________________________.
