- TheA(H1N1)pdm09viruswasunderstrongselectivepressuredueeitherto(1)theco-circulationofinfluenzaH3N2viruses,phenomenonthatwasnotobservedsincetheemergencyofthenovelvirusin2009,and/orto(2)thehostimmunepressure.

- ThesubstitutionA141Tisnearthereceptorbindingsite,iftheaminoacidchangeaffectedthereceptoraffinityofthevirus,thenitattainedacompensatorymutationinNA–N341S,inordertosustainvirustransmission.

- However,theshortperiodofcirculationoftheseviralvariantssuggeststhattheycouldhavebeenlesstransmissibleandunabletopersistoverthedominantstrain.Stilltheviruswasunderstrongselectivepressure.

S162I• Toovercomethis,asecondchangeinadifferentsitewasacquired,accompaniedinsomevirusesbyanovelmutationintheNA- L206S,withunknownproperties.

• Basedonouranalysisandthelowfrequenciesatwhichthesemutationshaveoccurredworldwide(<1%),suggestnoneofthesemutationswerefixedonthepopulationandtheselectivepressureofthevaccinationcampaignforthe2013-2014seasonmighthaveproducedviralextinctionunderabottleneckevent.

• Since2014,viruseshavemutatedatS162N– glycosilation site.
