Leadership and Sportsmanship:

The Game Changers

When establishing high expectations in

Sportsmanship/Citizenship,

in Kansas we have chosen to be:

Proactive

Not Reactive.

Leadership and Sportsmanship:

A Fundamental Belief of KSHSAA

High School Sports #1 goal should be 100%

focused on the students on the playing court or

field.

Participants should be guaranteed a

supportive environment which optimizes their

ability to perform without negative

distractions.

Winning is certainly a high goal but not at the

cost of providing a positive and safe

educational environment for the student

participants.

High school sports should be driven by

educational values.

Unlike club, college or professional sports which

seems to be a win at all cost venue:

Fan centered

Distracting the opponent causing them to

make mistakes or perform below their

potential.

Leadership has been described as a process of

social influence.

Sportsmanship has been described as a concept

of treating others fairly and being treated fairly -

maintaining self control and respect for local

authority and opponent.

These two are inseparable in the world of high

school sports

Leadership characteristics are:

power

vision

and values.

Leadership and Sportsmanship:

The Game Changers

Sportsmanship characteristics are:

cooperation

fairness

honor

and humility

Leadership and Sportsmanship:

The Game Changers

Sportsmanship should be an expectation of all

high school sports.

It is a learn practice!

Where do our children learn sportsmanship?

They learn it from YOU –

the positive leaders in their lives.

Administrators

Coaches/Directors

Parents

Students (Cheerleaders)

--through your words and

more importantly…

It is a proven fact known to most educators –

that high school students must be taught your

expectations, multiple times, in multiple settings

especially if you expect them to adopt these as

instilled behaviors for life.

High School students have to be told multiple

times before they learn any expectation.

(John Wooden’s interview with Michael Josephson

founder of Character Counts!)

Leadership and Sportsmanship: The Game Changers

Never doubt the importance of your consistent

modeling --

Children see and children do.

Leadership and Sportsmanship: The Game Changers

I genuinely believe kids want to please you, the

adult leaders in their life.

My challenge to teachers, coaches, administrators is

to be positive role models, who consistently lead

through their actions, by setting high standards for

their students/athletes to achieve. The key is

regularly and consistently communicating those

expectations. If done positively, I have no question

in my mind that the student athletes will respond.

Leadership and Sportsmanship: The Game Changers

At the KSHSAA we are constantly providing

resources for our schools to keep this message in

front of our administrators, coaches/directors,

students, parents and community.

Or do we still believe that high school sports

and activities are educational based providing

for the development of life long skills in a

safe and supportive environment?

If worked on – “We Can Make a Difference!”

Leadership and Sportsmanship:

The Game Changers

We are High School!

And I believe we can’t afford to drop the ball

when it comes to Sportsmanship/Citizenship.

As leaders our society can’t afford to lose this

important life long skill—treating other children

how we would want our children to be treated.
