rural regeneration

A scape in the land.

Within the identity of Pollinaria, the GALA treehouse lab will integrate a new field of action, a peculiar form of ecology, to the current merging fields of art and agriculture.

Our goal is to design and realize a strategy for rural regeneration through social and cultural life development and improvement, deeply interplaying with the local community.

The Lab aims to actively reestablish a strong, environmentally conscious connection between local people and the land.

A scape in the land. The physical core and epicentre of the Lab will be an archetypical habitat created around centuries old oak trees, living inside the Pollinaria farm.

Inspired by local spontaneous rural constructions and built using found and recycled materials from the farm, this tree house-like space will serve mainly as a meeting place and community centre.

A variety of activities will take place in its context, particularly focused on forming and sharing a knowledge about the role of contemporary art and culture in the sustainable development of rural areas through the valorisation of small scale farm production, environmentally conscious use of the land and farming techniques, and other means involving the participation of local community. The proposed space is also intended to function as the base of a local radio, which will broadcast mainly news and informative programs related to the above mentioned themes.

A scape in the land.

The Lab comprises a variety of activities: gatherings, talks, lectures, excursions and site specific interventionsrevolving around themes creatively dealing with agriculture and the protection and enhancement of the rural environment.

Authors, curators and coordinators among GALA project partners will be invited to participate to the Lab, dedicating lectures and other specific projects to the themes developed over the course of the Lab. Anthropologists, sociologists, environmental lawyers and other actors with a common interest in creativity as a crucial factor towards a sustainable evolution will also be involved.

A scape in the land.

Within the framework of the project, the tree house habitat will be developed as a prototype of an ideal meeting / learning / sharing place - the cradle of a new born and expanding alliance and movement - and its functions will be replicated under different forms also in other locations, such as village squares and streets, bars, homes, farms, cultivated fields and wilderness.

In all these places, community will meet for different purposes, to shape thought and awareness, exchange knowledge, define common actions. The initial connection between the circle of farms around Pollinaria is intended to progressively expandoutside the boundaries of it and form a network with similar experiences around the world.

A scape in the land.In an area threatened by a lack of prospects and values inspiring rural life and work, the Lab intends to provoke imagination and ways to explore and rethink the relationship between people and the land and, more extensively, between people and nature.

By a deep involvement of the inhabitants, it aims to regenerate a sense of human consortium within local community and to promote the valorisation of slow, intimate, sustainable scale of land management and farm production through a variety of activities directed to experience, share, transfer and articulate related knowledge.

At the core of the Lab is the ignition of a synergetic behaviour through which inhabitants can together develop a creative and mindful approach to their relationship with the rural environment and pursue a life model inspired by it.

Flatbread Society. An inspiration.Flatbread Society is a growing constellation of farmers, oven builders, astronomers, artists, soil scientists and bakers aligned through a common interest in the long and complex relation we have to grain.

Flatbread Society. An inspiration.Bakehouse Bjørvika is a public baking facility housed within an experimental architectural structure in Bjørvika. A multi-functional oven will facilitate various types of bread baking, smoking and cooking. The heat from the ovens will heat seating.

Flatbread Society. An inspiration.A demonstration grain field cultivating heritage grains. Planted in the "commons" the grains demonstrate the pressing issues of food security, biodiversity and intellectual property. The field will invite us to consider the history and currents of grain-based societies.
