System of updates

Jeppesen data base is updated every 28 days! Depending on the type of subscription:

only the changing charts are replaced (more economic but needs to be rigorously followed up!), revisions are sent by mail every 2 weeks.

the whole manual is replaced with a new version (= Airway manual)

A complete Airway Manual is printed every 52 days. For intermediate changes (the 28 days in between JAM publications) you will receive update envelope containing the changes.

− You should understand all the definitions and abbreviations explained in the glossary.

• Definitions of Minimum Altitudes!

• Differences ICAO-FAA

• Airway, DA/DH, FAF/FAP, GS intercept altitude, HAA/HAT, MAPt, MDA/MDH, mountainous area, OCL/H, MSA, Procedure Turn, Visibility,…

− Symbols used on the Jeppesen charts should have no secrets.

− When studying the introduction you should use real charts (see Student Pilot Route Manual) and try to identify all symbols used on the chart.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

On both Area and Enroute Charts they are always MSL (QNH), unless otherwise specified.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

The MCA is indicated next to the fix where the MEA change occurs and often applies only in one direction, which will be indicated. MCA's can be in feet above sea level or in flight levels.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

It is printed immediately below the airway centerline and is not prefixed nor suffixed by any letter. MEA's can be either above sea level or in flight levels, which will be clearly indicated.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

It is printed immediately below the airway centerline as well, but is suffixed by "T" for Terrain. Unless otherwise indicated, it is shown in feet above mean sea level.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

Is printed in italics and between brackets immediately below the fix to which it applies, prefixed by the letters 'MRA'.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTEIs shown in a circle. When segments have different altitudes, the dividing lines are clearly shown as magnetic bearings toward the facility. MSA is always presented in altitude above sea level, even if this MSA is higher than the transition altitude (TA).

This altitude is for EMERGENCY use only and does not guarantee NAVAID reception. (e.g. Lost comm. when radar vectored, flying on 1 engine (after TO), severe

icing, etc.)

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

Charts depicting minimum vectoring altitudes are normally not available to pilots. Some airports publish radar charts with MVAs depicted.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTE

The Route MORA is printed next to the airway centerline and is suffixed by an "a". Unless otherwise indicated, altitudes are always shown in feet AMSL.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Minimum altitudes

NOTEWithin the highest contour interval some terrain high points may be included along with their elevation above mean sea level. Since these contour lines are basically plain terrain elevation lines and are by consequence a pure form of terrain representation, they are NOT SAFE altitudes.

Jeppesen introductionProvided clearance

GRID MORA

• Jeppesen derived altitudes provide; 1000 ft clearance where highest elevations are 5000 ft MSL or lower; 2000 ft clearance where highest elevations are 5001 ft MSL or higher; • State supplied altitudes provide; 1000 ft clearance in non-mountainous terrain; 2000 ft clearance in mountainous terrain (changes of terrain exceed 3000 ft within 10 NM).

MORA+

ROUTE MORA

1000 ft clearance where highest elevations are 5000 ft MSL or lower; 2000 ft clearance where highest elevations are 5001 ft MSL or higher;

Jeppesen introduction

 • Radar chart

Chart indexTo communicate to pilots MVAs issued by the governing

authority – normally available only to controllers - Jeppesen supplies a Radar Chart for the airport area.

It is important to know and understand some limitations of this chart. The radar chart:

may not be drawn to scale; is centered around the radar position on the ground instead of a

navaid. Therefore, it may be difficult to determine your exact position on the chart, and;

depicted altitudes do not provide the same obstacle clearance as for example a MEA or MSA and may only be used at the discretion of the controller.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Radar chart

This chart may only be used to crosscheck the altitudes issued by the controller when under positive radar control.

OO-SFA, positive radar contact, descent and

Jeppesen introduction

 • STAR/ARRIVAL chart

Chart indexSTAR = arrival route linking a significant point (normally ATS

route) with a point from which a published instrument approach procedure can be commenced

STAR chart provides all information necessary for the pilot to fly the prescribed arrival route.

Vector STAR: some parts of the procedures are radar vectored. When this is the case, the direct distance from the last navaid to the field is often mentioned for planning purposes.

Since SIDs often cover large geographical area, this illustration is often not to scale.

AIRLINE TRAINING CENTER, INC.

Jeppesen introduction

 • SID/DP chart

Chart indexThere are two types of SIDs : VECTOR SID and PILOT NAV SID In Europe mostly PILOT NAV SID's are used and the label (PILOT

NAV) is often omitted.Remember that a SID does not cover an engine failure during TO

and that it is the responsibility of the operator/pilot to establish engine failure procedures for each airport where the aircraft is operated.

Since SID's often cover large geographical area, this illustration is often not to scale.

Jeppesen introduction

 • Airport chart

Chart indexOn some US charts, the chart index of the airport chart will be

the same as the chart index of the first approach chart. The airport chart is typically printed on the reverse side of the first

approach chart in the series. Airport charts depict communications frequencies as well as

runway, taxiway and ramp information. Additionally, approach and runway lighting, declared distances, IFR and obstacle departure procedures, and take-off and alternate minimums are shown.

Separate charts may be included that depict detailed ramp areas and parking positions as well as low visibility taxi routes.
