Method for question 2

• Step 1: Add the ratio parts

• Step 2: Find the value of one part. • Step 3: Multiply according to the ratio.

• Answer:

MLT : Novices 1 : 6

7

(21 ÷ 7 = 3)

(1 x 3 = 3) (6 x 3 = 18)

Summary

When given the value of one of theparts

a) Enter information under correct heading

b) Apply the same operation to both sides

MLT : Novice 1 : 6 ? : 24 8 : ?

When given the total quantity of a mixture e.g. 21 people

a) Add ratio parts

b) Divide to find the value of one part

c) Multiply according to ratio

MLT : Novice1 : 6

7

(21 ÷ 7 = 3) 3 : 18

1. Always set out the ratio problem with headings.

2. Simplify the ratio if you can.

Try these questions

Level 1 questions

Q1. Using the same ratio of 1:6

how many instructors are

needed if 30 novices want to

go on an expedition?

Q2. If a total of 28 people are on

an expedition, how many of

them must be instructors?

Level 2 questions

Q1. Using the same ratio of 1:6

how many instructors are

needed if 84 novices want to

go on an expedition?

Q2. If a total of 69 people are on

the expedition, how many of

them must be instructors?

Answers to Level 1 questions

Q1. MLT : Novice

1 : 6 ? : 30

Method: 30 ÷ 6 = 5 5 x 1 = 5

30 novices need 5 instructors.

Answer: 5 : 30

Q2. MLT : Novice

1 : 6 Method: The whole has been divided into7 equal parts. Find value of 1 part

28 ÷ 7 = 4

(4 x 1 = 4) (4 x 6 = 24)

Answer: 4 : 24

Check: 4 + 24 = 28

Answers to Level 2 questions

Q1. MLT : Novice 1 : 6 ? : 84

Method: 84 ÷ 6 = 14

14 x 1 = 14

Answer: 14 : 84

Q2. MLT : Novice 1 : 6 Method: Find value of 1 part 69 ÷ 7 = 9 remainder 6

7 x 9 = 63 but there are 6 extra people. One of them must be aninstructor to keep within the legalratio. 6 x 9 = 54 plus the left over 5

Answer: 10 : 59

Check: 10 + 59 = 69

Method

• Step 1: Add the ratio parts

• Step 2: Divide to find the value of one part.

• Step 3: Multiply according to the ratio.

• Answer:

Ball : Tracer 4 : 1

5 (200 ÷ 5 = 40)

(4 x 40 = 160) (1 x 40 = 40)

160 : 40

Q. The ammo container holds 200 rounds which have a ball and tracer mix of 4:1 (4B1T). How many rounds are ball? How many are tracer?
