FUEL FROM PLASTIC

CONTENTS

• Scope• Introduction to plastics• Classification of plastics• Method of converting

SCOPE OF THE TOPIC

These project solving two problems•Environment pollution•Another source for fuel

INTRODUCTION

• Waste plastics are one of the resources for fuel production because of its high heat of combustion.

• The conversion methods of waste plastics into fuel depend on the types of plastics to be targeted.

Current Situation

Plastic wastes are left on the streets…

….or in landfills

CLASIFICATION OF PLASTICS

• Thermo plastics • Thermo setting plastics

Common plastics and uses• A chair made with a polypropylene seat

-Polypropylene (PP)

• Food containers, appliances, car fenders (bumpers), plastic pressure pipe systems.

-Polystyrene (PS) • Food packaging.

-Polyethylene (PE

Methods of converting plastic to fuel

• Pyrolysis

• Random depolymerisation

Pyrolysis

• Pyrolysis refers to the thermal decomposition of the matter under an inert gas like nitrogen.

• For the production process of liquid fuel plastics are decompose at 450 to 550 °C.

Depolymerisation

• This is reverse of polymerization or de-polymerization.

• If such breaking of long polymeric chain or scission of bonds occurs randomly, it is called Random depolymerisation.

• Here the polymer degrades to lower molecular fragments.

• In the process of conversion of waste plastics into fuels, random depolymerisation is carried out in a specially designed reactor in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of coal and certain catalytic additives.

• The maximum reaction temperature is 350°C

Process Flowchart

CONCLUSION

• Plastic waste recycling is one of the most established recycling activities in economically developed countries

• In most of the situations, recycling of waste plastics is becoming viable in developing countries as well, as it generates resources and provides jobs.

• Tones of plastic to grams of wastes.
