ThescienceofrheumatologyhasprogressedenormouslysincethethirdeditionoftheOxfordTextbookofRheumatologywaspublishedin2004.Therehavebeenmajordevelopmentsinallthemajorsubspecialitiesofrheumatologyandrheumatologistsareenjoyingthefruitsofthebiotechnologyrevolution,withacornucopiaofbiologicalagentsinroutineclinicalpracticeorindevelopment.
Inkeepingwithaneweditorialteamthecontentofthebookhasbeenthoroughlyrevised,whileretainingthebroadstructureofthepreviouseditionswhichwereadistinctivefeatureofthebook.Thenumberofchaptershasincreasedfrom126to173,reflectingtheincreasingbreadthofknowledge.Newchaptershavebeenwrittenreflectingthechangingfaceofrheumatology.Wehaveexpandedtheimagingsectiontoincludeseparatechaptersoneachofthemainmodalities,andchaptersontherapeuticscoverthenewbiologicagentsincludingareasthatweforeseebecomingmainstreamduringthelifeofthebook.
