Dear Parents and Friends I thoroughly enjoyed the assembly presented by the children in room 3. I was interviewed early in the process about the members of the school community and then answered questions in an email sent to me by two of the students. The message was clear and simple: our school community is made up of many different parts and each role is important in ensuring we have a very caring and encouraging environment for our students. Congratulations to our honouree teachers who awarded the Merit Certificates on the morning. Don’t forget our ANZAC day service on Friday commencing at 9am. Oval Upgrade Over the last week and a half we have had our oval upgraded after an inspection by members of the Department of Education determined there were some dangerous areas that needed repairing. We opted to do it the last two weeks of term while there were still warm days and the new turf had time to become established. The oval will be in high demand as training for the interschool carnival increases and we host a number of interschool football and soccer matches next term. Theatre Sports Culmination Over the last 7 weeks GSSHS has hosted two teams of four year 5/6 students in a unique opportunity which allowed then to participate in Theatre Sports training. This was organised by the GSSHS drama teacher Olga Konstantouras and the school funded the program for 7 local primary schools. Monday night was the culmination of this program and the groups competed for a trophy. Our students were fantastic and we congratulate them on winning the competition. Our thanks to Mrs Galley who initiated this in our school a number of years ago and encouraged the high school to trial it this year. Thanks also to Ms Blee who supported our students on Monday afternoons. Library Committee We have formed a library committee to review the way we use our library and to see if we can make it an even better resource for our community. We had a number of staff who registered their interest and two of our student leaders who joined us at our initial meeting on Monday. One of our Parent Board Members also joined us and will report our

Enrolments for 2018

It’s that time of year again! For our Year 6 students, the high school enrolment process needs to get underway. Representatives from Governor Stirling Senior High School have been out to speak to our students about this process.

Pre-Primary students will automatically progress to Year 1. Kindy students will automatically progress to pre-primary. If you do not plan to return in 2018 please notify the school.

For students wishing to enrol in Kindy in 2018, now is the time to come into the school and fill in an Expression of Interest. For those in area, you will be given an Enrolment Form. To facilitate the process, please bring in a copy of your child’s birth certificate, their immunisation details (As per the ASIC Register) and proof of address. Enrolments for Kindy in 2018 are due in by the 21

2017. STEM This term has been very busy with staff and students experimenting with the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) resources given to us by the department. In some areas we have topped them up to allow a whole class to access them and bought extra ipads to assist their use. Some classes have buddied up so the older students can mentor the younger ones. This has been very successful and we hope to showcase this during term 2. STEM has been the focus of our Swan Valley Network and our staff will meet with colleagues from other schools on Monday 24

th April to share successes and ways of

integrating this technology into other subject areas. On behalf of the staff I would like to thank you for your support in our partnership during this term and look forward to seeing all the children safe and ready to learn on Wednesday 26

th April.

Evelyn (Year 5 Room 13)

This student is a Year 5 girl who consistently demonstrates the 5 keys to success both in class, and at recess and lunchtimes. Her unique and quirky personality lightens up the classroom and she is a ‘go to’ person for random facts and guaranteed smiles. This person demonstrates modesty and the potential to lead others through sad times. This student will be a strong contender for leadership roles in Year 6 and beyond – as long as she can stop giggling! This girl always steps up to any challenge and takes her peers along with her for an always enjoyable ride. Today we recognise a truly super dooper student. Please welcome forward Evelyn Spicer-Wensley FOOD: Spaghetti and 2 minute noodles HOBBIES: Chasing my younger brother SPORTS: Volleyball TV/MOVIES: Moana BOOKS: Magicalamaty & Moana FUTURE CAREER: Author or Illustrator

Lilijana (Year 2 Room 1)

Lilijana is a valued class member who always tries her very best. She sets a great example to her peers by being positive and completing her work to a high standard every time. Lilijana is a kind friend. She is a critical thinker and is a creative problem solver. She is indeed a Super Student! Tayla (Year 3, Room 2)

This month’s Outstanding School Spirit Award goes to a student who is kind, thoughtful, encouraging of others, courteous and shows great enthusiasm for school life. This student goes out of her way to provide assistance to others and she uses her initiative to solve problems seamlessly as they arise. Her ability to be organised and see the ‘big picture’ allows her to assist others in small ways - which can make all the difference. She approaches her fellow class mates with a smile and a willingness to help through direct action or encouraging words. This student has a gift for learning but it is her desire to help others which truly makes her shine. We are pleased to announce that the Outstanding School Spirit Award goes to Tayla
