During October’s Art Walk, the
Little Shop opened to the public
for the first time. Visitors were
able to see inside, browse and pur-
chase merchandise, and delight in
the shop’s interior, which was de-
signed by Suzanne Staud.
Suzanne Staud, represented bythe Chartreuse Muse gallery,
showed her original art, which re-
mains up for the rest of the month.
Thanks to Suzanne’s inspired
vision for the shop, the Little Shop
will be one of the most fun and
exciting spaces you’ll see this
year—and certainly one of the
most interesting. Once you see it,
you won’t forget it. Trust us.
Thanks to Suzanne for her many
hours of hard work, devotion to
the project, and attention to all the
details—she made it happen!
Inside the shop you’ll find items
such as office supplies, mints,
magnifying reading glasses, books
written and/or illustrated by local
authors and artists, book bags,
bookmarks, gift items, and more.
The Little Shop opened for busi-
ness on Monday, October 19.
Hours: Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Thursdays: 3-6 p.m.; and Satur-
days 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Cash and
checks accepted.

We have been
asked why the
Friends of the
Modesto Library
hosts a Scholastic
Book Fair rather
than a used book
sale.
There are
practical reasons such as the lack of
storage space for used books. But, a
major reason for holding a book fair
that appeals to children and teens
(besides making money, or course) is
that it gets more books into the hands
of more Modesto families with
children. Stanislaus County has a
low literacy rate, so encouraging
kids’ love of reading has a positive
long-term economic impact on our
community.
The Friends are not alone in this
endeavor. Many local youth-serving
agencies will have Wish Lists at the
next Book Fair, November 12-14,
2009. These community groups
include:
• Children’s Crisis Center/Cricket’s
House
• Golden Valley Health Centers/
Reach Out and Read
• Haven Women’s Center
• Hutton House

For every dollar collected in the
One for Books jar at our Book Fair,
Scholastic matches the donation
through three national non-profit
organizations dedicated to helping
kids and families in need: Kids in
Distressed Situations, Inc. (http://
www.kidsdonations.org/), the
National Center for Family Literacy
(http://www.famlit.org) and the
Marine Toys for Tots Foundation

money in our jar is used here to fulfill
wishes with books for our local

Help lift our community – one book
at a time. As you draw up your
holiday and birthday gift lists,
consider giving the gift of reading: a
gift that gives a child wings!
See you at the Library.
