• Where did the species come from?

• How did they get into their current environment?

• How can they be stopped/ Do we need to stop them?

** DO NOT WRITE ON THE READINGS!**

Invasive vs. Non-Native

• Invasive species = “a species that is non-native to the ecosystem under consideration and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.”

• Non-Native species…. “many alien species are non-invasive and support human livelihoods or a preferred quality of life.” - National Invasive Species Council

What do they do here?• To live:

• Adapt to new environment

• Become self-sustaining

• Spread out!

• To take over:

• Take resources from natives

• They have no biological control factors here AND native species have no defense

How do they get here?

Intentional

• species escapes or is released

• introduced for agricultural reasons

Accidental

• seeds in shoe tred

• contaminated freight or products (hitchhikers on boats, wood pallets, etc.)

What do WE do once they’re here?!

• We can do 2 things… 1st - prevent it’s introduction and 2nd - eliminate it once it’s here

• we can restrict the import and export of commodities

• report invasive species sightings to authorities

• volunteer with natural resource agencies
