Tracy, Kathryn, Dave, and Barry of the Ohio Department of Higher Education Conference team, are very excited to welcome you to the 19th edition of OETC! You are among more than 4,000 educational technology professionals and enthusiasts from around and beyond Ohio who have
gathered to explore the cutting edge of P-20 learning and innovation.
This year’s conference provides you with a variety of opportunities to explore and learn about new technology integration skills and
resources while networking with thousands of your peers:
Kathryn invites you to enjoy this year’s General Session speakers, Fredi Lajvardi, nationally recognized STEM educator
and subject of the major motion picture, Spare Parts; and Director of Open Education at Creative Commons, Cable
Green is a leading advocate for open licensing policies that ensure publicly funded education materials are freely and openly available.
Dave has an exciting lineup of Pre-Conference workshops and over 200 sessions from some of the most respected people in the educational technology field, including Wednesday’s Featured Sessions: featured speaker Leslie Fisher, who is always a crowd favorite, and General Session Speaker Cable Green, who will be moderating a panel discussion on Open Education Resources. Be sure to check out the full session schedule on our new mobile app!
Barry is happy to bring some of the great OETC education onto the exhibit hall floor with the brand new Next Gen
Learning Presentation Area located at the back of Hall B!
Finally, Tracy welcomes you to stop by the registration and help desk located at the front of Hall C with any questions you
may have about registration, OETC in general, or just to say Hi!
We all would like thank you for taking the time to join us. We hope you have a fun and fulfilling conference!
Sincerely,

Conference Welcome and General Session
9:00 AM – 10:30 AM in Hall CFredi LajvardiNationally Recognized STEM Educator & Subject of theCritically Acclaimed Documentary, Underwater Dreams, and Major Motion Picture, Spare Parts
For more than two decades, high school science teacher, Fredi Lajvardi has engaged, motivated and challenged students by making science fun and introducing them to the field of robotics. With countless hours spent after school, mentoring and investing in the underserved students at Carl Hayden Community High School, Lajvardi drew national attention in 2004, when he entered his diverse high school team in a university level national underwater robotics competition, where they not only proved their skills and ability to compete at that level, but they placed first, defeating leading universities, including MIT.
First covered by Wired magazine, their inspiring story drew attention from local and national media outlets and led to the acclaimed documentary, Underwater Dreams. In March 2015, the film was selected by President Obama to screen at the White House in honor of National Robotics Week and the launch of the “Let Everyone Dream” Coalition, a national initiative introducing new multi-sector partnerships in support of STEM education for underserved students. Their story was also adapted into the major motion picture, Spare Parts, starring actor and comedian, George Lopez as Lajvardi.
Honored with numerous awards, including the IEEE National Outstanding Educator for 2005, the Arizona Department of Education Leadership Award for 2006, and the City of Phoenix Outstanding Teacher of the Year each year from 2005 to 2009, Lajvardi has and continues to be a significant contributor to the increasing interest and awareness of STEM education nationwide. With an effective leadership philosophy, incredible story and a spirited passion for teaching, Lajvardi offers valuable and inspiring insight on fostering teamwork, sparking creativity and helping individuals realize and maximize their potential.
Featured Speaker: Leslie Fisher, Chief Geek, Fisher Technologies1:15 PM - 2:15 PM in Union Station Ballroom BSponsored By: Squirrels
Leslie Fishers interest in technology began while studying music at the University of Southern California. She realized the value of utilizing computers for music mixing and recording, using the internet to find music resources. She soon realized she was spending more time discovering technology than playing music so she changed her major and tried to figure out what geeky thing she could do for the rest of her life. After graduating from USC, Leslie had a quick stint as a Trainer, before joining Apple Computer, where Leslie was one of the first Apple employees assigned to study Internet growth and implementation. A few years later, Leslie was part of Apple’s massive lay off. The day after her layoff, her phone began to ring with Apple customers requesting consulting, training and presentation services, resulting in the creation of Fisher Technologies Inc. Fisher Technologies Inc. is now a worldwide company specializing in presenting emerging and exciting technology solutions to educators all over the world.
Open Education Resources Panel DiscussionModerator: Cable Green, Director of Open Education, Creative Commons2:30 PM - 3:15 PM in Union Station Ballroom B
Cable works with the global open education community to leverage open licensing, open content, and open policies to significantly improve access to quality, affordable, education and research resources so everyone in the world can attain all the education they desire. His career is dedicated to increasing access to educational opportunities for everyone around the world. He’s a leading advocate for open licensing policies that ensure publicly funded education materials are freely and openly available to the public that paid for them. Cable has 20 years of academic technology, online learning, and open education experience and helped establish the Open Course Library. Cable holds a PhD in educational psychology from Ohio State University, and enjoys motorcycling and playing in the mountains with his family. He lives in Olympia with his wife and two boys.
