When we consume commodities, we consume them as commodity signs – we aim to acquire, through purchasing a product, the meaning with which the product is encoded. - Marita Sturken

The concept of commodity culture is intricately allied with the idea that we construct our identities, at least in part, through the consumer products that inhabit our lives. - Marita Sturken

Weekly task:

Your task is to experiment and develop your initial ideas of your project with consideration of lighting.

You should demonstrate control of lighting with consideration of how it has impacted on the meaning of the picture. Has it brought, drama or mood to the image? Has the lighting been used to create the impression of objective truth or a subjective interpretation of the sitter? How has it been achieved? What influences have informed your approach?

Seminar:

Each group has been given an image. Having had lighting workshops with John on Monday, we want you to consider how it has been lit.

Consider the quantity, quality and direction of light.

Is it hard or soft, flat and even or with harsh contrast? How harsh are the edge of the shadows? What direction is the light coming from? What is the warmth or colour of the light? Has it brought, drama or mood to the image? Has the lighting been used to create the impression of objective truth or a subjective interpretation of the sitter? Can you make any connections to other images and their genres or meanings?

…And most importantly... Why has this lighting been used? What has this brought to the image? How has it emphasised the meaning or strengthened our reading of the image?
