SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT• Food energy is the amount of
energy obtained from food that is available through cellular respiration.
• As food burns, it releases energy.• Formula to calculate food energy:
ENGAGE
• Which nut has higher energy? • Why?
Cashew Nut
Peanut
Almond
ENPOWER• Material & Apparatus:
– clamp – stand – boiling tube– food: peanut, cashew nut, almond – a mounted needle– data logger and computer– temperature sensor– Bunsen burner– matches– electronic scales
ENPOWER
Data logger
ENPOWER• Procedures:
1. Connect the temperature sensor to the first socket on the data logger.
2. Weigh the food sample and record it. Add 30 cm3 water to the boiling tube.
3. Start the sensing software and see that it recognizes the sensors we attach.
4. Set up the software to record. Heat the food in a Bunsen flame to light it.
5. Heat the tube of water with the burning food until it has completely burnt.
6. Re-light the food if necessary.

Discussions
•How does the graph tell you how much energy is in the food?
•Which food sample has highest energy?
•Did the water lose heat as a result? How could this affect your results?

Unique Features of This Activity
• save time and less works done• data more accurate• the apparatus is quite simple and
gives only a very approximate estimate for each foodstuff, so there is scope for students to suggest improvements in an evaluation
• allow students to understand better
