Following the Production of Proteins in a Cell
“The Endomembrane System”
What’s What’s up? I am up? I am
the the Nucleus… Nucleus… what do I what do I do for the do for the
cell?cell?
Do you Do you remember me? remember me?
I’ll give you a I’ll give you a hint: I am in hint: I am in
charge of making charge of making ribosomes and ribosomes and
the RNA used to the RNA used to make proteins! make proteins!
Well, before we go Well, before we go too far, we must not too far, we must not
forget about me! forget about me! Sometimes I’m rough Sometimes I’m rough and sometimes I’m and sometimes I’m smooth… no matter smooth… no matter
what, I’m always what, I’m always important to protein important to protein
synthesis!synthesis!
I have a bit of a I have a bit of a complex, because I complex, because I
go by several go by several different last names.different last names.
However, my first However, my first name is always Golgi.name is always Golgi.
Which Which does give does give

well…well…
I am a ribosomal I am a ribosomal subunit… soon to subunit… soon to
become a ribosome.become a ribosome.

Endomembrane System Left-side Interactive NoteBook Drawing
For this assignment, you will be asked to create a poster that shows the relationship between different parts of the endomembrane system.
In your IntNB, you will need to show the following:
– Nucleolus making ribosomes– Ribosomes being shipped out of nucleus to become either free or attached– Proteins being made by free ribosomes in the cytoplasm– Protein being made by attached ribosomes of RER– Protein folding inside the RER– Protein being modified by the Golgi– Vesicles moving from RER to Golgi – Vesicles leaving the Golgi and fusing to the cell membrane, releasing its protein
contents– Vesicles leaving the Golgi and becoming a lysosome
Blown-up view of the cell membrane (with phospholipid and proteins)
Be sure to label in your drawing: Nucleus, Nuclear Pore, Nucleolus, Free Ribosome, Attached Ribosome, Rough ER, Vesicles, Protein, Lysosome, Cell Membrane, Phospholipid
Your drawing should be neat, colored, and in final draft form.
