CLMA progress: Key Areas
IIAP corridors identification and refinement to
reduce footprint
Development of a Reclamation Plan
Development of a Monitoring report to measure
effectiveness
Data maintenance initiative
Best practices review
Support Population management
Integrated Industrial Access

Integration to reduce industrial
“footprint”
Development of common corridors
Orderly development rather than “ad-
hoc”
Reclaim roads to return to caribou
habitat sooner
Reclamation Plan
Active roads 1,566 km’s
Deactivation: e.g. Temporarily retire, pull
crossings, seeding, rollback, install water
bars, prevent on high way use
Planned deactivation 137 km
Reclamation: Return to previous productive
state
Planned Reclamation 40 km

Data maintenance
FtMF hired a forest tech to maintain the
data sets.
Confirm and track “as built” roads for all
sectors
Track and report on deactivation and
reclamation projects
Develop monitoring project
IIAP next steps
CLMA is not seeking approval for plans.
CLMA is seeking support for the process.
“The IIAP is a process not an end product”.
Driven by the initial endorsement of last years product , the CLMA intends to make this an iterative process of continual update based on new and better information. This will be resubmitted at least annually.
Web site development to serve products to members
Best Practices review
Hired Golder and Associates to:
Complete a review of operational practices for effectiveness for caribou.
Develop recommendations for improvement (what should we stop doing vs. what we should start doing)
Will be complete early December 2006
Will be used to influence policy development to get best value
Population Management
Wolf control (SRD underway)
Caribou Cow/Calf Survival project (SRD
led: CLMA members, Husky, BP, and ACC
provided funding support
Caribou Calf Project
Ten pregnant cows captured early March 2006 by SRD
Kept in pens (protected from predators)
Previous work from Yukon increased one year old calf survival by 7 times
Released in June 06 after the last calf was two weeks old.
Results were favorable however influenced by last years wolf control program
What are the next steps
Continue to work with government to develop proactive solutions to have caribou and development
Provide the province with an example of a success in ILM
Monitor for effectiveness
Continually improve to add value to members and government
Communicate to others (web site, quick notes and presentations)
Expand the program
