Every year countless visitors stop at Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery for a tasting, lunch and advice on how to enjoy the mountains.
Now, we’ve distilled our local knowledge into The Five Minute Gallop, a guide to the experiences available in the Thredbo Valley and surrounds.
The area is famous for winter and skiing, but with warm long days and cool relaxing evenings this is the perfect time to visit.
Experience the natural beauty of the mountains on foot, or head out on horseback. Spend the day fishing, playing golf, biking or just sitting watching the river flow. Then enjoy relaxing drinks as the sun sets over the Snowys, and great food made with local ingredients.
So come for a day, a weekend or a longer stay. We’d love to show you around!

Horses are an integral part of the mystique of the Snowy Mountains. The wild brumbies and working horses of the area are even part of our national culture.
Dining is one of the not-to-be-missed experiences of the Snowy Mountains.

There is something magical about horse riding in the Snowy Mountains. The wild surroundings, breathtaking scenery, amazing wildlife: an environment unlike anywhere else on earth. Rides can be catered to all levels, from absolute beginners to the experienced thrill seeker. Young children too small to ride a full-size horse can still join in the fun through pony rides. The kids will love it, and for the family photographer it’s a dream come true!
For those who prefer to take in the scenery on foot, don’t miss the many and varied hiking trails. Naturally one of the most popular walks — and almost a rite of passage for visitors to the region — is the trip to the top of Mt Kosciuszko, the highest point on the Australian continent. There are two main ways to head to the top of Kosi: straight out of Thredbo with a flying start up the hill on the Kosciuszko Express chairlift, or from Charlotte Pass on the Summit Road.
Kosciuszko National Park is one of the largest parks in Australia, and there are numerous walks to suit day trippers or seasoned trekkers. Take a day walk to a glacial lake, stay overnight on the Main Range Track, or head out for a multiple night adventure. The mountains are stunning in spring and summer with the wild flowers in bloom, cool and relaxing in autumn, and they present a stark beauty after the first snowfalls as the area starts to head into the ski season.
The Five Minute Gallop area includes some of the best fishing — including fly fishing — in Australia. If you’ve never been fly fishing before the rivers of the Snowy Mountains are a great place to start: tuition and equipment is available for beginners but if you’ve already mastered the basics local fly fishing guides can help show you the best locations to fish and how to further improve your technique.
From eco-habitats to cosy bed and breakfasts to luxury you can always find accommodation to suit. So what are you waiting for? We look forward to sharing the wonders of the Five Minute Gallop with you. n
Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery is at the heart of the Five Minute Gallop and is a Snowy Mountains experience like no other.
Wildbrumby Schnapps is produced at the distillery from local fruit, including the delicious home-grown raspberries. At the distillery you can do a full tasting tour, get up close to the impressive machinery and find out what it takes to make a bottle of schnapps. After sampling the range, sit back, relax and enjoy a delicious meal in the Wildbrumby Café. Take advantage of the country air and enjoy the valley views from the outdoor seating — a perfect way to spend a leisurely day. The café has Paulaner beer on tap, and a range of wines and non-alcoholic drinks. And if you crave a coffee, it serves some of the best in the Snowy Mountains: the ideal accompaniment with breakfast or the authentic handmade Austrian cakes.
In fact dining is one of the not-to-be-missed experiences of the Snowy Mountains. There is a wealth of restaurants and cafés specialising in quality local ingredients such as mountain trout, lamb, venison and Hobbit Farm goats cheese. Visit The
