Another Work-In-Progress Fiskars book. Yes, it's too dark again, but it'll be so much nicer in actual print.

FISKARS BOOK 5Valo Pimeä

Part of the on-goingKorven klaanin Series

ironworks was founded in 1649 by Peter Thorwöste, when Queen Christina of Sweden granted the Dutch businessman a privilege to manufacture cast iron and forged products, with the exception of cannon. In the same year he received permis-sion to set up a blast furnace and bar hammer in Fiskars.

In the seventeenth century, the parish of Pohja became the center of iron manufacturing in Finland: the ironworks in Antskog were founded in 1640, the following year saw the founding of the Billnäs ironworks, and Fiskars joined the group in 1649. The area had natural water power that could be harnessed, and plenty of forests to provide the raw material for the necessary charcoal.

363 years later, there is still a forge in Fiskars. Upi Anttila was one of the first craftsmen to set up in the town, and his work-shop seems the beating and clanging heartbeat of the town. Stepping inside is quite like heading into the forest - dense, dark and impressive. And a little ominous.

The forest and the forge seemed joined in Fiskars. They are in a literal sense of course; the charcoal, the wood, the fire, the dark, the light. And there’s an integrity of sorts. A depth and a resonance that hangs strong in the air, and sits deep in the ground. These images hopefully refelect that, meeting on the pages together like an horizon at dusk. The images in this book feature master

blacksmith Upi Anttila and his workshop, alongside the landscape around Fisakri.
