Velashape II
CASE STUDY – COSMETIC INDUSTRY
Potential Market for Fat Destruction Procedures
In a survey of 1,045 women in NA56% indicated interest in non-invasive fat destruction procedures
Total Addressable Market in the US: 19.5M Patients
World Market: $2 billion by 2017 ($700 million in the US - Globaldata)
MARKET SIZE
Survey Takeaway:• “Pain-free with no downtime, it’s effective and totally believable.”• “Over 75% of patients come in to my office and immediately ask “How much is it going to hurt?"
PAIN FREE TREATMENT - SAFETY
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
OBJECTIVE
Next generation, Velashape III:- Pain free treatments- More efficient treatment - No downtime.
Request- Non contact temperature sensor integrated in applicator for
skin temperature monitoring- Closed loop RF mechanism to ensure reaching the set-point
skin temperature for optimal treatment efficacy, and NOT exceed the set-point temperature for patient safety and comfort.
OBJECTIVE SYNERON
Our challenges:- Size – very limited space
available- Direct IR lamp interference- Field of view – lens- Ambient temperature
fluctuations- Gel applied on skin: thermal
gradient.
CHALLENGES
Solution: Sensor selection:- Small size- Thermocouple compatible- Unpowered- No drift- High accuracy- High repeatability- High interchangeability.
OUR CHALLENGE: SIZE – VERY LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE
Direct influence from IR lamps: immediate sensor response when IR lamps were switched on – measurement error of approx 3C.
OUR CHALLENGE: DIRECT IR LAMP INTERFERENCE
Inner copper shroud blocking IR lamp radiation.
Inner surface of shroud must be very low emissivity, otherwise the temperature of the shroud itself is measured.
SOLUTION: DIRECT IR LAMP INTERFERENCE
OUR CHALLENGE: FIELD OF VIEW - LENS
SOLUTION: FIELD OF VIEW
SOLUTION: FIELD OF VIEW
No Power RequiredT/C Compatible
Compensates for the Ambient Temperature
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION
ZnSe lens and window are not 100% transparent for IR radiation – some signal is absorbed:
Sensor spectral response: 5.5 – 20 µm
OUR CHALLENGE: BIG AMBIENT TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS
The thermopile detector is responsive to the net power that it absorbs:P = σ * A * (Tt4 - Ta4)The Stefan-Boltzmann equation where:- P = net radiation power- A = surface area - Tt = target temperature - Ta = detector temperature.
Since the detector absorbs power at σ * A * (Tt4) and re-radiates power at its own temperature, the σ * A * (- Ta4) term is needed. Tt is attenuated by the additional lens and window attenuate Ta is unchanged: ambient compensation error
OUR CHALLENGE: BIG AMBIENT TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS
1) Sensor thermally isolated: slower heat up and more uniform heating
2) Additional thermocouple to measure sensor housing temperature to allow accurate ambient temperature compensation1.
1: solution that is provided to Syneron is under NDA and can not be disclosed here. The example given here is more general in nature but covers the concept
SOLUTION: BIG AMBIENT TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS

SOLUTION: BIG AMBIENT TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS
OUR CHALLENGE: GEL ON SKIN – THERMAL GRADIENT. SOLUTION: HEAT BALANCE
The results for Tt=24C and Tt=59C. - IRt/c = Initial temp. in degC,- t/c = additonal t/c temp in degC,- Corrected: with ambient temperature compensation - Scaled: with heat balance.
RESULTS
VelaShape III Advantages
Increased RF Power:
- End point temperature is achieved much faster- Reduction in treatment time- Consistent, reproducible resultst
Sophisticated Feedback Mechanisms:
- New closed loop RF mechanism and built in temperature sensor- Better monitoring for elevated temperature in the tissue- Increased patient comfort and safety
Movie
Two important items I would like you towalk away with:
1. Market is very demanding and keeps on challenging the industry
2. There is always a solution if the thermal process is thoroughly understood – sensor by design.
