Obesity is a huge problem in many Western countries and has attracted considerable medical
interest as researchers are trying to find the $!'t!# for obese people. However, rather than
taking responsibility on their weight, obese people have always given excuses that they lack
of time to exercise besides having slow metabolic rate. They argue that no matter how little
they eat, they still gain weight because their bodies break down food and turn it into energy
more slowly than those with a normal metabolic rate.
“This is nonsense, says !r "usan #ebb from the !unn $utrition %aboratory at &ambridge'niversity in (ngland. "he referred this as a metabolism myth, where the exact opposite is
true) *at people have faster metabolic rate than thin people. Overweight people actually burn
off more energy because they have more .e$, bigger hearts, bigger lungs, and they all need
more energy +ust to keeping going.
y measuring the exact amount of metabolic rate of her patients, !r #ebb was able to show
that metabolism is not to be blamed. *irstly, the patients were not allowed to eat for -hours.
Then, a special e/uipment was used to .a.'ate the total amount of calories someone
.!#$'e$ as well as total number of calories burned off over the following week. %astly, the
patients0 metabolic rates are accurately measured in the lab. The result revealed that an obese
person has a high metabolic rate due to the extra "e/ht which he or she is carrying. This is
logical because moving the body re/uires more energy.
eing obese significantly increases a person0s risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high
blood pressure, cancer and the list seems almost endless. 1rofessor 2an &aterson from
'niversity of "ydney, 3ustralia is confident that science will eventually be able to reduce
obesity problem but the only effective ways for the ma+ority of obese people to lose weight
are to change their diet and to exercise regularly. “2n theory, one could reduce as much as
45kg in a week following a very ambitious eating and exercise pelan, devoting more than
seven hours per week to strict exercise, and under a physician0s care, he says, “6ou can
safely lose 7 or more kilogram a week at home with a healthy diet and lot of exercise. 2n fact,
having a goal like looking great at a wedding or reunion can be great motivator, says him.

8ecently, treatment for obesity had concentrated on surgery, behavior modification and drugs
to decrease appetite. How the drugs worked was often not understood and many caused
severe side effects like cramping, diarrhea, flatulence, nerve damage and intestinal
discomfort. *or surgery, besides claiming many lives, severe complications that include
cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmia and blood clots are also common.
!espite the way it feels, losing weight is not a mysterious process. 2t is a simple matter of
burning more calories than one consumes. The key is to forget about instant results and settle
in for the long run.

once or twice a week in their neighborhood. Other than that, they also claim that the garbage
bin is always overflowing with garbage. 2ronically, along the roadside, rubbish would pile up
at a place with a sign asking people not to throw.
William ?ok, a resident in Taman "entosa, >a+ang, said he faced the same problem asgarbage collection was only carried out once a week in his neighborhood. "tray dogs would
come and tear the garbage bags, rubbish would be strewn all over the road. “When 2

.!#t%!. 2f that is the case, why do the contractors come to collect once a week@ he said.
“?y neighbor0s son has taken photos of the garbage piles in our area and sent them to the
council but not action has been taken, he added.
2llegal dumpsites are not only an eyesoreA they also pose a health risk as they attract flies,
mos/uitoes, rats and other pests. The problem gets worse when garbage is thrown on rivers
banks as it will contaminate the water source. One of the examples is the dumpsite on the
banks of "ungai alak near >ampung aru alakong. 2t was reported in &tar'etro last year
that he privatelyBowned land was turned into a dumpsite nine years ago and garbage now
lines a C55m stretch of the river.
2n order to overcome this problem, councilors suggested other waste disposal methods suchas increasing the number of landfills instead of having +ust one to cater for all municipalities.
The local councilors have got so fed up of the neverBending rubbish problem that a task !%.e
was set up recently to terminate 3lam *lora0s contract. 3ccording to ?1>+ councilor, ".T
&andra ?ohan, the councilor wants to seek a workable solution. “Why should we pay even a
fraction of management fees when they are not performing@ claimed ?ohan. The force will
study the e.ha#.$ of waste disposal systems and review the contractors0 performance, as
well as discuss the process of hiring new contractors. “We have nothing against the
contractors who are able to carry out their work properly. he continued.
To control the neverBending garbage issue, !atuk Hassan said they would enforce stricter
procedures. *irst time offenders will be issued a warning. The third time they fail to follow
the agreement, they will be issued a termination notice. “We have handed in a proposal to the
state government to terminate the contracts of underBperforming contractors he further
explained.
