description

Directed towards the rehabilitation of survivors of torture and organized violence, from 3 months after the trauma and onwards. Practical recommendations for health workers at different skill levels in regions lacking specialized medical care. An interdisciplinary approach containing physical, physiological, pharmacological, psychological, social, psychiatric and therapeutic aspects. The book is problem-oriented, and not professionally oriented. It uses the globally developed concepts of the International Classification of Functioning & Disability (ICF; WHO, 2001) rather than diagnoses from Western medicine. This serves to emphasize the rehabilitation approach, which is focused on a person’s ability to be active and to participate, rather than on disease or on remaining injury. Thus the problems are listed in the three sections: Body Functions; Activities & Participation and Context.

DIGNITY – DANISH INSTITUTE AGAINST TORTURE

DIGNITY is a self-governing organization independent of party politics working for a world free from torture.

DIGNITY exposes and documents torture on a health professional basis. In Denmark DIGNITY provides treat ment for refugees who have survived torture. Treatment methods are based on systematic examination of the torture survivors and research into torture and organised violence; the causes of torture and the con sequences it has for individuals, their families and society. The knowledge generated is used in intervention, education and advocacy in order for DIGNITY to con-tribute to the global effort to abolish torture.

DIGNITY’s international projects are carried out in close co-operation with local organisations. Treatment, prevention and education of local health professionals are main parts of the projects. Inter-vention projects are thus aiming at both diminishing the after effects of torture and preventing the use of torture and organised violence in the future.
