Since 2002 the 30,000German Bundesligaclub Wolfsburg fans
have been able to enjoysports events without havingto worry about the weather.While the formertextile roofing manufactured by CENOTECalready protected the grandstands in theold stadium, all the grandstands in thenew Arena Stadium are roofed with atranslucent membrane structure madeof high-tensile Précontraint® 1202Fluotop® T2 polyester membrane.To ensure that the structure retains itsaesthetic appeal for many years, thecovering material was given a finalFluotop® T2 coating of high-concentra-tion PVDF. Thirty-two radial trussesplaced no more than 14 meters apart—and some up to 40 meters long—formthe bearing system, which is mounted ata height of 33 meters. The differentmembranes, which measure up to 14 by36 meters, are mounted between radialtrusses and stabilized against snow andwind. It took over 20,000 sqm of mem-brane material to cover the entire roofarea of just under 15,000 sqm. It goeswithout saying in this particular case
that Ferrari Précontraint® textiles havereally highlighted their exceptional
dimensional stability. Thanks to a lowintrinsic weight of around 1 kg/sqm anda thickness of 0.8 mm, it was possible tocover areas of several thousand square
meters without any bearing devices. Forfans in the new Arena Stadium thatmeans there are no pillars to spoil theview of the field.

Opened in December 2002, the new Arena Stadium located in the Wolfsburg Allerpark has a futuristicmembrane structure fully in line with the "Car City". A major reference for Ferrari® textiles that have subsequently been selected for numerous other similar contracts, notably for the Euro 2004 soccer competitionin Portugal and the Olumpic Games in Greece.

B atyline® has all the necessaryqualities for this task. “Thepool hall is an extremely
simple construction. A rectangle.We played on a wealth of variationsincluding shapes, materials andcolors. Batyline® played the mediatorrole amidst all these opposing factors.This textile acts as a mirror and hasa calming impact on the multitude ofvariations. Its good looks and technicalqualities together make a perfectcombination”, declared ThierryNabères. The horizon, therefore,consists of huge one-piece sectionsof Batyline®. “Eight ceilings werebuilt for a total surface area of1,270 sqm” explained ChristianJallot, of Interlignes Déco. Thecontractor went on, “Our principalconcern was really the size of the areato be covered. We had two one-piecepanels of 182 sqm each and six of156 sqm. And just to make thingsmore complicated, we had to takeinto account sloping pools with steps.The ceiling was constructed at aheight of 9 meters”.Fo r t h e l a s t e ighteen years,Christian Jallot has been workingsolely on tensioned ce ilings .“Batyline® installation techniques
have developed over t ime. Evenif the elas t ic braid method stillrepresents 90 % of the installationprocess, my knowledge of the pro-duct has enabled me to improve the whole procedure.” ChristianJallot’s specialist skill is sewingstrips together to make one largesection.The joints are invisible on thebig panels. Thierry Nabères’ wish forvisual continuity is therefore entirelyrespec ted. “Thanks to Batyline®
we have been able to create invisibleaeration sub-frames in the roofing”,explained the architect.
“Perforations, which don’t exist in anon-hollow material, are the perfectsolution here.A remote control electricmotor drives the sub-frames.” Otheradvantages: “Batyline® is the perfectsolution for a swimming pool’saggressive environment. The level ofhumidity in the air varies between 65and 85%.The level of chlorine in the air, evenwhen kept to a minimum, corrodescertain materials. Batyline® is immuneto these problems. The membranealso has an M1 flame-retardantclassification. In other words, a very
high level”, concludes ThierryNabères.

A tensioned ceiling: an outstanding technical achievement in Paris, France
The Epinay sur Seine complex near Paris was designed by Agence TNA, under the supervisionof Thierry Nabères and Catherine Devaux. The architect was keen to “design the poolaround a form of visual communication”. Work on light effects was a priority. “The principalidea for the large glass south facade was a system of successive filters using Batyline®.” The
objective: to spread light evenly throughout the complex, avoiding dark spots and obtaining variable levelsof light, adjustable according to the time of day.

A s a member of the BHDGroup, ACS Production isa specialist company in
textile architecture. Located on theBrittany coast in France, ACS hasestablished a worldwide reputationin the building and naval sectors andas the Long Beach Cruise Terminalbrought together the ACS specialtiesof naval architecture and building, itwas a good opportunity for the firmto get things together and reallyshow its paces. The contractingauthority entrusted ACS with thecontracts for three sites: the facadeof the huge, travelers' parking gara-ge; the construction of a 120 m by11 m shelter for buses; and a verybig pedestrian gangway. Covering theparking area was certainly the mostspectacular of these missions. Theclient's motivation was simple—adda festive touch to an impressive but somewhat aesthetically starkinfrastructure, and improve thevisual comfort of motorists in this
sun-drenched region.Thus it was thatseveral stunning coverings wereinstalled carrying prints that depictsome of the cruise company's desti-nations. The results lived up toCarnival expectations but, it was adelicate operation: "Wehad to adapt toAmerican buil-ding methods;we had to comeup with newsolutions foreverything —fixing metal chassisto a completely prefabricated buildingfor instance", recollects ACS CEOYannick Faurant. As a discerningconnoisseur of the Ferrari® range,he is pleased to have chosen aPrécontraint® FT fabric: "It's anopen-work fabric that has all therequired dimensional and fire-resistance
qualities. What's more it produces apleasant inside atmosphere whilereproducing perfect screen-printingeffects". To undertake this Us project,ACS sent several full teams over,including the fitting team that stayed

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal (USA) shows off its colors!The Long Beach Cruise Terminal has been completely overhauled by Carnival Group, theworldwide cruise leader. Several architectural textile features have contributed to the referencevalue of this site in terms of infrastructure revamping. The experience of French companyACS together with the quality of Ferrari® Textiles were also essential factors.

The contractor's budget didn't stretchto building two facades so we developeda false "double-facade" consisting ofa main facade and a sort of "screen".The first (the real) facade is compactand closed and provides heat insulation.The second part is neither wind- norrain-proof and is placed 60 cm infront like a screen of expanded open-workmetal.This module neutralizes all thefittings, visually speaking—the airintakes, extractors, flaps, piping andthe rest. Seen from afar the buildinghas a very regular uniform appearance,and as you get closer the impressionof transparency increases.

T he principal characteristics

full use in this construction.
ON THE BANKS OF THE RHONE
Located on a piece of land of over
30,000 sqm on the banks of the Rhone,
this sports complex is divided into
3 separate specialist areas:
� The velodrome, which has a 200 m
track and spectator stands with 600 seats
� The administrative building, consis-
ting of classrooms, conference loun-
ges, restaurant, etc.
� The gym of 40 m x 20 m.
Each of these areas has been designed
and built according to the specific
needs of the different activities whilst
at the same time offering functional
links between the different sections of
the complex.
DOUBLE MEMBRANE
The velodrome’s “plump” roofing was
constructed using a double membrane
and is the most outstanding feature of
the whole construction. The fabric is
supported by a light, three-dimensional
metallic belt in the form of a bicycle
wheel. The structure’s ‘spokes’ conver-
ge at the center of the ring and carry
the heating, lighting and sound cables
and ducts. Thanks to the pneumatic
membrane, the inside of the building is
thus completely free of any weight-
bearing supports and so space is opti-
mized to the maximum. Moreover, the
double membrane provides reinforced
thermal insulation and natural lighting.
NATURAL LIGHTING
The translucent membrane offers very
high quality natural lighting throughout
the whole surface area. This gives
savings in the cost of artificial lighting,
while in winter a natural supply of
calories enters through the fabric.
THE SYSTEM
Tension in the membrane is obtained by
a pneumatic system which enables the
pressure to be adjusted depending on the
outside load (between 370 and 1,000 Pa).
This adjustment is made automatically
via sensors positioned inside the mem-
branes which control the air influx or
the opening of de-pressurization flaps.The welded joints follow the network ofcables to ensure an overall effect ofgeometrical symetry.
INSTALLATION
Considering the weight of the membra-nes (7.5 T), a well-defined installationprogram was essential. The Covertexteam installed the inner membrane in5 days, and 3 days were all it took toinstall the outer one.
World Cycling Center in Aigle, SwitzerlandFounded on the initiative of the International Cycling Union (UCI) and with the support of theIOC, the World Cycling Centre was opened in May in the Swiss town of Aigle. With its resolutelymodern design, orchestrated by Pierre & Pascal Grand and Tekhne management, the World Cycling
Centre is an outstanding piece of work. One of its most remarkable features is the velodrome roof which is coveredby 5,000 sqm of double pneumatic membrane, the biggest ever installed.

T he headquarters of Reuters
SA Europe is located on a
magnificent site in an indus-
trial and small crafts park in Geneva.
Phase 1,completed in 1997, included an
office and two computer buildings.Phase
2 consisted of a second office building
and a link building providing a protected
walkway between the Phase 1 & 2 buil-
dings.The buildings had highly technical
requirements;the architecture was there-
fore very high-tech but designed to fully
integrate into the natural surroundings of
the site, offering pleasant and comforta-
ble office spaces, favoring natural day-
lighting and maximizing transparency
toward the outside.
THE GLAZED ROOF: 950 SQM
SOLTIS® 92 TRANPARENCY AND
CONFORTOBALE LIGHT
The central atrium has a glazed roof
consisting of two sloping sections
and a central vaulted section. The
atrium is used as office space, therefore
temperature control was necessary
in order to provide a comfortable
working environment for the users.
Technically it was decided to ensure
automated interior sun protection
using a Soltis® 92 textile (in alumi-
num / white).The opening percentage
of the Soltis® (± 4%) very limits
effectively heat exchanges with the
interior. And the aluminum side
eliminates glare to provide effective
natural daylighting.

The gable ends of the atrium have
structural glazing with glass fin
supports, which provide optimum
transparency toward the outside.
Here again, it was important not to
make any mistakes when selecting
the material to be used.The architect
finally decided on Soltis® 99 double-
faced fabric (aluminum / white)
whose light texture and pixelization
inhibit light ray aggression butwhose transparency ensures contactwith the outside. Précontraint technology ensures that Soltis® 99remains straight.
EXTERIOR VERTICAL FACADE:720 SQM FOR EFFECTIVE
HEAT PROTECTION
The large glass facades to the westaccommodate a series of officeswhere the primary design criterionwas obtaining high-comfort working
spaces. The outside blinds are placeda meter away from the facade andare incorporated into a number ofaccess balconies used as walkwaysfor cleaning the first floor facade.Theblinds come down straight into theirrunners and then project at 45º togive protection from the sun withoutobstructing the view to the outside.
Comfort and Transparency at Reuters Headquarters in GenevaAt the new Reuters headquarters in Switzerland, the architecture was designed to fully integrateinto the natural surroundings of the site, offering pleasant and comfortable office spaces, favoringnatural daylighting and maximizing transparency towards the outside.

L awrence Fabric Structureswas contracted by a majorconstruction company to
design and manufacture temporaryentrance canopies for a local Children'sHospital during renovation and newconstruction. Because the fabric canopyserved the client extremely well for four-plus years, the architectural firm, HOKof St. Louis, decided to pursue theidea of using fabric for the permanentdrive-thru entrance canopy. Since it is aChildren's hospital the main themes inboth the inside and outside designsinclude natural elements such as animals and plants, to celebrate the existence of life.
The design called for two triangular sections of the canopy to project overthe drop-off area leading to the mainentry of the hospital. The initial designquickly turned into an abstract butterfly.As the design developed it was decided
to divide construction and engineering
into two parts. The contractor,
McCarthy Brothers of St. Louis, would
be responsible for the design,engineering,
and construction of the substructure,
and Lawrence Fabric Structures in the
person of Jerry Grimaud would be
responsible for the design, engineering
and manufacturing of the canopy top
including frame and fabric.
The frame was designed as a web of
2'' x 3'' aluminium tubes, so Harry
Daugherty was consulted to analyze
how the frame would support the fabric.
At that time a fabric had not yet been
chosen, although a vinyl fabric was the
favoured choice. The client wanted the
vibrant colors of the butterfly to be visible
both on the outside and the underside of
the canopy. The top side of the canopy
would be seen from many of the upper
floors of the hospital and other surroun-
ding buildings. Having multi colors on
both sides of the fabric eliminated most
backlit vinyl materials since they have a
white appearance on the underside.The
fabric that stood out as the best for this
application was Précontraint® Color
Design.The color was the same on both
sides and the Ferrari® product was
approved by the consulting engineer.
Both frame and fabric layout were pre-
pared on an Auto CAD 2000 program
integrated into Lawrence Fabric's
Gerber Cutting Edge machine.The coni-
cal shape of the frame was laid out with
the fabric covering, and illustrated the
configuration of all the colors. M Panel
software was used to convert a
3-dimensional shape into flat patterns,
then downloaded into the Gerber Edge
software for cutting and marking. The
Cutting Edge machine cut the fabric
and at the same time drew the lines ofthe butterfly. The fabric was flipped onthe Gerber table and the markings forthe reverse side were made.
When the fabric panels were RF welded,the markings for the color separationlines were within 1/8'' tolerance.Thefabric hems were finished and the fabricwas ready to paint.Touching colors hadto be painted on separate days to avoidcolor run.The vinyl inks had to be curedfor a week before a clear UV protectioncoat was applied.The clear coat addedUV resistance to the vinyl ink and alsoimproved the cleanability aspect of thevinyl ink areas. A clear coat was addedto both sides to keep the color sheenconsistent. The Précontraint® ColorDesign accepted the inks well.
The client was extremely pleased withthe result of the canopy that served as apractical drop-off area during inclementweather. By using fabric, the customerwas able to expand the celebration-of-
life theme to the front canopy,a point offirst impression. Even though thecanopy is a block away from a major thoroughfare the "Butterfly canopy"is becoming a St. Louis landmark.
