FERNANDA MARIA

Considered one of the most ',truly repre" sentative interpreters of the [ado, Fernanda Maria was born in the old Moul;'aria district of Li.bon in 1937. She began .inging the fado at 13. while working ~ a waitress. Her family requested that she ~ive up singing and waiting on tables, but after a short hiatus, Fernanda resumed her career. Her rise since then has been meteoric and she is in constant demand for recordings, radio and television engagements, and personal appearances. She has appeared in theatrical productions and has worked in three of the best {ado restaurants in Lisbon, Her re" cording! are the largest selling fa.do records in Portugal.

Although Lisbon is constantly being improved with modern buildings the various quarters never lose their characteristic charm. In this march we are told of the contrasts of each section of the city and the charm each quarter has.

2. CANDElA (Oil Lantern) A fado about a girl who has not seen her lover for several days and she listens to the village chapel bells, alone and unhappy await· ing his return. When someone new shows interest in her and tells her so, she avoids seeing him again in order not to have any more bad experiences, and to avoid further suffering.
