Almost all havegrandiose choral first movements which show off the MonteverdiChoir at their very best.March Gramophone: Record of the Month.

Benjamin BRITTEN (1913-1976)Simple Symphony; Temporal Variations; ACharm of Lullabies; Lachrymae; Suite onEnglish Folk Tunes, Op. 90Nicholas Daniel (oboe), Catherine Wyn-Rogers(mezzo-soprano), Philip Dukes (viola), NorthernSinfonia, Steuart Bedford (conductor)Continuing the revival of the outstandingCollins Classics Britten series, this new releasecovers works spanning all Britten’s publishedoutput, from the early Simple Symphony of1934 to the string arrangement of Lachrymae, composed in 1976, thelast year of his life.Britten’s early compositions consist of an enormous number of pianopieces, songs, chamber music and orchestral work. He retained aspecial affection for these childhood efforts and was persuaded torevive and publish some of them later in life. The Simple Symphonywas written for the schools market. Its four movements are memo-rably tuneful, the Playful Pizzicato being an especially delightfulinvention. One of the numerous works to be published since Britten’s death in1976 is the Temporal Variations for oboe and piano. Composed andfirst performed in 1936, negative reviews informed Britten’s decisionto withdraw the work which was never heard again during his life-time. In the early 1990s, Nicholas Daniel (the oboist on this disc) sug-gested to Colin Matthews that an arrangement for oboe and stringscould well take the place of the aborted suite. It was premièred atAldeburgh in 1994.

Luigi BOCCHERINI (1743-1805)Cello Concertos Vol. 3: Nos. 9-12Raphael Wallfisch (cello), Northern ChamberOrchestra, Nicholas WardThis is the eagerly anticipated third and finalvolume in the Naxos series of Boccherini’s CelloConcertos, performed by Raphael Wallfischand the Northern Chamber Orchestra. Of Boccherini’s surviving cello concertos theConcerto No. 7 in G major is probably the bestknown, closely rivalled by a B flat CelloConcerto arranged by the 19th century cellist Grützmacher. This newdisc includes a performance of the Concerto No. 12, a work only dis-covered in 1987.“These days it comes as a refreshing change to have 18th centurymusic back on modern, not period instruments. These performanceshave the best of both worlds. … These are early works which showBoccherini at his most attractively individual.” The Guardian on 8553572

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750)Goldberg Variations, BWV 988Jenö Jandó (piano)Naxos proudly presents a brand new record-ing of Bach’s seminal Goldberg Variations, performed by Jenö Jandó, one of the mostprolific recording artists in history.Published in 1741-42, the Goldberg Variationsoffer a conspectus of Bach’s wit and techni-cal accomplishment, and herald a final peri-od in which he would continue to explorethe possibilities of canon and the use of a single theme. “Jandó is an eminently sane, no-nonsense artist in total controlthroughout, who phrases perceptively and gives each movementreal character. He is devoid of mannerisms and eccentricities, with afeeling for period style; his playing is tonally sensitive without overdo-ing gradations of dynamics, firmly rhythmical without either stiffnessor anachronistic rubatos, convincingly pianistic. … This set wins mywholehearted admiration.” Gramophone (Editor’s Choice) on TheWell Tempered Clavier, Book I (855379697).

The songs are performedin the order of their composition (this rationale of chronology within ageneral theme will be applied across the other volumes of the seriesto make up four self-contained and individually satisfying recitals),and alongside several perfect miniatures we here encounter threeof the major cycles: the five ‘Venetian’ songs (to the poetry of PaulVerlaine), L’horizon chimérique, and Mirages.

BEETHOVEN: VCL STAS 1 & 3GASTINEL/GUYThe artistic duo formed by Anne Gastineland François-Frédéric Guy is definitely prov-ing to be one of the most exciting aroundjust now. After a break last year, with eachpartner making an acclaimed incursion intothe concerto repertoire (Elgar-Barber for theformer - ref. V4961 -, Brahms for the latter -ref. V4944), they now take up the storywhere they left off two years ago. ... andconclude the cycle of Beethoven's complete works for cello andpiano with the earliest of all the sonatas (1797), already astonishinglymature in style, and the most lyrical of the five, the marvellousSonata op.69, contemporary with the Pastoral Symphony, along withthe three sets of variations, too often neglected, in an interpretationthat does full justice to the composer's fine tributes to two illustriouspredecessors, Mozart and Handel. We can be confident that thecritics will echo BBC Record Review, which said of the first volume:'They breathe together, their ensemble is wonderful, and they man-age to impose themselves individually without dominating eachother . . .' Exceptional chamber music playing!

DOULCE MEMOIREDOULCE MEMOIRE / DADREThis CD is neither a compilation, nor a 'bestof', nor a commemorative issue to mark thefifteenth anniversary of Doulce Mémoire. Onthe contrary, it is an invitation to a journey, aleisurely journey that will give us time to daw-dle in streets, palaces, churches, the salonsof courtesans, as we search for lost har-monies, for the music that Leonardo da Vinciconsidered a lesser and unfortunate sister ofpainting, because it vanishes into air eachtime it is played (una sorella minore e infelice perchè svanisce divolta in volta): a journey in the spirit of the Grand Tour, to form ourtastes, to discover new horizons and new parallels between the arts.Let us start from Paris, then take the road to Lyons, the gateway toItaly and to the duchy of Milan.

The G minor PianoConcerto presents a tremendous challenge even for world-class pianists;Dvorák didn't take future performers too much into consideration as hewas writing, and although this piece is strikingly beautiful, it is tremen-dously demanding, and every effective moment onstage must beearned a hundred times over in the practice room… Martín Kasík is a starpianist of the Czech music scene, and you will certainly be interested tohear how he handled the rigors of recording this piece live.
