Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farm workers together to

learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farm workers, and build diverse coalitions working for

social change. SAF works with farm workers, students, and advocates in the

Carolinas and nationwide to create a more just agricultural system. Since 1992, we have engaged thousands of students, farmworker youth, and community members in the farmworker movement.

FARMWORKER FACTS•There are 2-3 million farmworkers in the United States.

•Agriculture is consistently ranked as one of the three most dangerous occupations in the U.S.

•Farmworkers’ average annual income is $11,000; for a family it is approximately $16,000. This makes farm work the second lowest paid job in the nation (after domestic labor).

Retreats

“The most impactful experience during my summer in both Wilson and traveling for theater were the conversations. Whether in the car transporting a worker or facilitating theater discussion, it amazed me how easily some opened up and told me their personal tales of struggle and hardship- be it leaving their families, working, or the days spent walking in the desert to cross the border.” Andrea Barreto, 2013 Intern

“Farmworkers are not people who need us to swoop in and solve their problems for them. Nor are they all mistreated. They are capable, dignified workers, whose blood, sweat, and tears go into our food, for which we should be grateful. And I think I will definitely go into my future endeavors doing my best to stick to SAF's name and do everything with and not for farmworkers.” -Shaoli Chaudhuri, Fellow 2012

"As student organizers we should and will put just as much effort in ensuring that the injustices faced by farmworkers today will not continue for future generations.” Christine Contreras, Organizer, 2011
