InterfluxJohn Ready
September 3 – October 25, 2013
Gage Family Art Gallery & Christensen Center Art Gallery
Ready’s sculptures and works on paper function as interventions, questioning the nature and value of objects within continually fluctuating ecologies. Using accumulation as process, the work explores the narrative potential of objects as they mark individual tastes and cultural appetites.
Ready’s work in both galleries utilizes jewelry structures and formats but is produced larger in scale, hanging either inside the gallery or from trees around campus, as if they had been left behind by giants. Generally comprised of ordinary materials (used
pots, pans, lamp parts, ashtrays, bowling balls, etc.), the pieces add value to or cause a re-valuation of the materials selected for each project. In doing so, our ability as viewers to reassess our personal and cultural environments is reinforced by altering the context and use of the objects.
John Ready lives and maintains his studio in La Crescent, Minnesota. He is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and is the Director of University Gallery at UW-L.

The Sunrise Watches the SunsetSkye Gilkerson
A one-day event during the Fall Art Tour
September 5 – October 27, 2013
Johnson Gallery
Skye Gilkerson’s work in the Pop-up Exhibition is a satellite addition to the on-campus showing of her work in Bethel University’s Johnson Gallery. Through site-specific installation, sculpture, video and works on paper, Skye Gilkerson examines places and objects from everyday life that are often unassuming and easily overlooked. From this baseline of common experience, she uses subtle interventions to ordinary, often ubiquitous materials to unfold our awareness of our surroundings and destabilize familiar structures. Space, time, light, and language, as well as architecture, landscape and the pages of a newspaper all become the materials for this exploration.

Natura SyntheticaCurated by: Alonso Sierralta Artists: Aaron Dysart, Josh Johnson, Lisa Loudon, Cecilia Ramon, Amy Toscani, Jesse Volk
September 5 – October 5, 2013 Concordia Gallery
Closing Reception: Saturday October 5, 1–5 p.m.
Natura Synthetica is an experiment in duality, ambiguity and coherence. The invited artists use a variety of materials to evoke both tension and harmony, specifically by combining the “natural” object against artificial man-made material. The viewer is invited to create meaning and context through personal associations and ideas derived from the material’s context.

“play”Stephen Mohring
September 27 – November 21, 2013 Soeffker Gallery, Drew Fine Arts Center
The recent and new sculpture I’m making is, at its core, a meditation on the transformation of wood from tree to hand-made object. All the wood used has been locally sourced, milled by me, and worked primarily with hand tools. The videos in each piece are non-narrative, slow loops of simple movements illuminating the base, often-elegant motion in activities like standing, walking, waiting, listening, and watching. By combining the visceral nature of traditional well-crafted materials with the seductive allure of time-based media, I hope to draw attention to the raw beauty of this deeply physical transformation.
Stephen Mohring teaches sculpture at Carleton College. He runs the college sawmill program, which he developed in collaboration with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, producing sustainably harvested lumber for the art department. He also works as the resident set designer for Ten Thousand Things, a Twin Cities based company that brings lively, intelligent theater to people with little access to the wealth of the arts.

Working: Myklebust + SearsAndrea Myklebust and Stanton Sears
September 27 – October 23 Law Warschaw Gallery, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center
Since 1993, Andrea Myklebust and Stanton Sears have collaborated to create sculptural works at more than 40 sites across the United States. These large-scale public works are designed with extensive input from stakeholder communities. Through thoughtful use of form and relevant iconography, they reflect and honor the natural and cultural histories of their surroundings.
Myklebust and Sears have designed figurative works, terrazzo floors, railings, columns, benches, fountains, bas-relief friezes and a 63-foot-tall bell tower. The sculptures have included elements made from glass, steel, aluminum, limestone, granite, slate, bronze or wood, depending on the needs and parameters of the project.
The physical scale and site-specific nature of these works make it impossible to stage an exhibition of the finished sculptures. Our exhibition, Working: Myklebust + Sears, is an effort to look behind the scenes at the methods and considerations that make these remarkable works possible.

LarvalAdam Hamilton, Trevor Knott, Alissa McCourt, Sreekishen Nair
A one-day event during the Fall Art Tour
The term “larval” describes a specific developmental phase in the lives of insects and other such animals, which is the earliest active stage from their hatching. In its shape and anatomy, the larval form is entirely distinct from the animal’s subsequent mutations. As such, that which is larval is not only primal, energetic, fresh, and fundamental, but also immature, transitional, vulnerable, and crude. This tension undergirds the work of these four MCAD graduate students as they explore new sculptural possibilities through the lens of the fundamental, or “larval” aspects of their more developed artistic practices.

TWO PROSPECTIVE RETROSPECTIVESChapters Lynn A. Gray
Fire Turtle Wayne E. Potratz
September 3 – October 12, 2013
Katherine E. Nash Gallery
Professors Gray and Potratz joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in the late 1960s. Since then they have taught and mentored countless students; both have made contributions to the Minnesota and national artistic ecology that run deep and wide. To mark their retirement from the University faculty, the Katherine E. Nash Gallery presents an in-depth look at the artistic practices of these artists with the exhibitions Lynn A. Gray: Chapters and Wayne E. Potratz: Fire Turtle. Lynn A. Gray creates two-dimensional artworks with a variety of media, from traditional drawing to oil
bar, stencil and white gas. Wayne E. Potratz creates three-dimensional artworks with cast metals as the foundation and includes a variety of materials from stone and shell to animal and plant materials. Their artworks share a physicality of expression. Gray’s mixed media drawings appear to be carved out of pictorial space and Potratz’s sculptures display a lightness of being not traditionally associated with metals cast at extremely high temperatures.
Wayne E. Potratz is a fiscal year 2013 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant and the Katherine E. Nash Gallery is a recipient of an Operating Support grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature; the arts and cultural heritage fund, and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Remote View
A one-day event during the Fall Art Tour
This group exhibition invokes the realms of magic, illusionism, spiritualism and comedy as they relate to lived experience and physical props. The works are both performances and sculptures, both genuine expressions of these crafts and foils to discuss related issues: the realities of lived experience, identity, and time.
Performance: Saturday, October 5, 1–5 p.m.

UNIVERSIT Y OF ST. THOM AS
Spanning a range of media, this exhibition seeks to explain the visual vocabulary of Christian sacred imagery housed in the University of St. Thomas collections. Made of metal, stone, glass, paper, wood, and a variety of other materials, these works express both individual and cultural interpretations of Christianity over time and space.
This exhibition, curated by graduate student Gretchen Burau, features drawings and quotations by artist and anthropologist Tobias Schneebaum that pertain to works in the AMAA @ UST. During the 1970s and 80s Schneebaum spent time in Asmat communities and assisted with objects collected by he Diocese of Agats, bishop Alphonse Sowada and members of the America Crosier Catholic order.
