Youwillnotbeallowedtoregisterifyoudonotcomplywiththeminimumadmissionrequirementsforyourspecificstudyprogramme.
STEP 1: FINANCIAL ASPECTSYouneedtodothefollowingbeforeyouwillbeabletoregister: Paytheregistrationfeeatleastfivedaysbeforeregistration. Ifyouareabursaryholder,youarerequiredtoprovidetheStudentAccountsDivisionintheClientServiceCentrewithaconfirmationletterfromyoursponsororbursar,atleastfivedayspriortoregistration,sothatUPcanrecordthesedetailsinthesystemand,ifapplicable,waivetherequirementtopaytheinitialregistrationfee.
Theproofofbursarymustbeonanofficialletterhead,signedbythesponsorandmustconfirmthetotalamountofthebursarygrantedtoyou,aswellasindicatewhatthebursaryamountcovers(egtuitionfees,accommodation,meals,textbooks,etc).
Aformtoassistthesponsorindefiningthebursaryamounts,isavailableontheUPwebsiteatwww.up.ac.za/feesfunding,chooseUndergraduateFunding/Relateddocuments/EmployerorOtherBursary.

Aninadequatelevelofacademicliteracycanimpactnegativelyonastudent’schancesofacademicsuccess.TheUniversityofPretoriahasprocessesinplacethroughtheGrade12 languagemarks(EnglishorAfrikaans)orthroughanacademicliteracytesttoidentifystudentswhomightneeddevelopment.FulldetailswillbecommunicatedintheOrientationProgrammeforRegistrationandStartoftheAcademicYeartobedistributedtoalladmittedstudentsinNovemberorDecember.Ifyouarerequiredtowritethetest,timewillbescheduledintheprogramme.IfyourGrade12marks(EnglishorAfrikaans)aretobeused,FacultyAcademicAdministrationstaffwillregisteryoufortheappropriatestudyprogramme.

2.4 Student access cards
TheClientServiceCentreissuesstudentcardsandyoumaycollectyouraccesscardfromtwodaysafterregistrationuntilthedateonwhichlecturescommence.
Presentyourproofofregistrationinordertoobtainastudentcard. Astudentcardwillnotbeissuedwithoutproofofidentification(ID,passportordriver’slicence).
WhenstudentsmoveintoaUniversityofPretoriaresidence,theyareissuedatemporarymealcard.ResidencestudentsmustexchangetheirtemporarymealcardforastudentcardattheStudentCardDivisionintheClientServiceCentrefromtwodaysafterregistrationuntilthedateonwhichlecturescommence.Thestudentcardwillthenbeused as a meal card as well as an access card.
Thefirststudentcardisissuedfreeofcharge.Intheeventoflossordamage,youmayapplyforaduplicatecardattheClientServiceCentreatacostofR50.
Lost,stolenordamagedstudentcardswillnotbeissuedwithoutproofofidentification(ID,passportordriver’slicence).
Studentcardsprovideaccesstothecampusandvariouscomputerfacilitiesandbuildingsoncampus.Keepyourstudentcardwithyouatalltimes.Thestudentcardmustbepresenteduponrequestandduringexaminationsandtests.
2.5 Discontinuation of studies or modules and changing of study programme
Youcannotsimplystayawayfromclassorjustinformthelecturerthatyoudonotwanttocontinuewithyourstudies,astudyprogrammeoramodule.
Thelecturerisnotinvolvedintheadministrationrelatingtosuchchanges. Studentsneedtofamiliarisethemselveswiththerelevantduedates. Changingstudyprogrammesordiscontinuingyourstudiesmayhaveaneffectonyour
account. Foranyenquiriesregardingthefinancialimplications,contacttheStudentAccountsDivisionintheClientServiceCentre.
Changing study programmes or withdrawing from modules (registered students)
Ifyouwishtochangeordiscontinueamodule,itcanbedoneontheUPPortal(StudentCentre).

2.7 Examinations
Pass requirements
Inordertopassamodule,astudentmust:- obtaintheminimumexaminationmarkprescribedforthatmodule;- obtainafinalmarkofatleast50%;and- complywiththesubminimuminsub-divisionsofmodules,asstipulatedintheregulationsoftheparticularfaculties.
Eachfacultyshould,bywayoffacultyregulations,determinetheweightthatisallocatedtotheyearorsemestermarkandtheexaminationmarkinthecalculationofstudents’finalmarks.Notallyearandsemestermodulesinafacultyneedtobedealtwithinthesameway,althoughalargedegreeofuniformityisdesirable.
Subjecttootherfacultyregulations,astudentpassesamodulewithdistinctionifheorsheobtainsafinalmarkofatleast75%.
Ancillary examinations
Afterwritinganexamination,theexaminersmaysummonastudentforanancillaryexaminationonparticularaspectsoftheworkinamodule,withaviewtoawardingafinalexaminationmark.
Supplementary examinations
Subjecttootherfacultyregulations,astudentmaybeadmittedtoasupplementaryexaminationinamodule,incaseswhere:

UP Museum and heritage collections
UPArtsmanagestheUniversity’smuseumsand52collections.Thesecollectionsincludethelargestsculptureandceramicscollections,andartarchiveinSouthAfrica,theNationalMapungubweArchaeologicalCollection,aswellasaresearchlaboratoryforobjectsconservation.
Themuseumscontinuearich106-year-oldresearchtradition,makinguseoftheartandheritagecollectionsthatarefundamentaltothedailyprofessionalmanagementofthesemuseums.Themuseumsservestudentsandresearchersbymeansofpracticalclasses,collectionvisitstostoragefacilitiesandexhibitions,specialisedmuseumtoursandresearchopportunitiesforpostgraduatestudies.Themuseumsalsopartnerwithmanydepartmentsandfaculties,scholarsandstudents,aswellaswithsomeoff-campusinstitutionstoencouragecollaborativeandsupportiveresearch,andtoprovideresearchaccesstothecollections.Thesepartnershipsprovideanenablingresearchenvironmentforaskingquestions,pursuinganswersandpushingtheboundariesofknowledgeaboutthecollections.

toaddresstheRegistrarontheappropriatedisciplinarymeasures,theRegistrarmaytakestepsagainstthestudentwithoutimplementinganyfurtherprocess.TheRegistrarmaydeprivethestudentofarightorprivilegeexercisedintermsofhisorherregistrationasastudentasprovidedforinsubparagraph1.3.1.2,orreprimandthestudent,orimposeafinenotexceedingtheamountdeterminedfromtimetotimebyCouncilforthispurpose.WherethestudentisoftheopinionthatthepunishmentimposedbytheRegistrarisunreasonable,heorshemaylodgeanappealinrespectofthisspecificaspectintermsofparagraph1.5.
1.2.6 ShouldtheRegistrardecidetoorderadisciplinaryinvestigationbytheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students),acopyofthewrittenchargeshallbeservedonthestudentconcerned.Inthedocumentthestudentissummonedtoappearatthespecificdate,timeandvenuestatedinthedocumentinordertoanswertothecharge.
1.2.7 Ifthestudentisaminor,hisorherparentsorlegalguardianmustbeinformedofthedisciplinaryinvestigationinamannerwhichtheRegistrardeemsappropriateunderthecircumstances.
1.2.8 TheRegistrarshallnotifyallpersonswhomustbepresentatthedisciplinaryinvestigation.
1.2.9 Anaccusedstudentshallbeentitledtobeassistedbyhisorherparentsorlegalguardianduringthedisciplinaryinvestigation.
1.2.10 Anaccusedstudentshallnotipsoiurebeentitledtolegalrepresentationduringthedisciplinaryinvestigation.Ifthestudentsorequests,theChairpersonoftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)maygiveleavetothestudenttoemploytheservicesofalegalrepresentativeathisorherowncost.TheChairpersonmayalsogivepermissiontoathirdparty,otherthantheparentorguardianofthestudentorhisorherlegalrepresentative,toassistthestudent.
1.2.11 TheRegistrarmay,asthecasemaybeandwhenitisjustifiedbythecharge,appointacompetentpersontohandlethechargeagainstthestudentonbehalfoftheUniversity.Insuchinstancetheaccusedstudentisipsoiureentitledtolegalrepresentation.However,thestudentremainsresponsibleforhisorherownlegalcosts.
1.2.12 TheprocedurefollowedduringaparticulardisciplinaryinvestigationisdeterminedbytheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students),takingintoaccounttherulesoffairadministrativejustice.Thelatter,amongotherthingsentailsthattheaccusedstudent1.2.12.1 doesnothavetoincriminatehim-orherself;1.2.12.2 isaskedwhetherheorsheadmitsthecharge;1.2.12.3 ispermittedtopresenthisorherdefenceinamannerthatthe
Committeedeemsappropriateunderthecircumstances,butwhichisatthesametimefairtowardsthestudent;
1.2.12.4 isallowedtoprovideevidenceinhisorherfavour;and1.2.12.5 isallowedtocross-examineanyonewhotestifiesagainsthimorher.
1.2.13 TheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)shallkeepminutesoftheproceedingsorensurethatsuchminutesarekeptinamannerthatitconsidersappropriateunderthecircumstances.
1.2.14 IftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)cannotreachaunanimousdecision,thedecisionofthemajorityofthemembersshallapply.Inthecaseofanequalvote,theChairpersonhasacastingvote.
1.2.15 Ifsorequestedbyastudentwhoisfoundguilty,theDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)mustfurnishwrittenreasonsforitsdecisionand/ordisciplinarysteps.

DisciplinaryCommittee(Students)may,withdueconsiderationofanyguidelinesapplicabletominimumpenaltiesforparticulartransgressionsasdeterminedbytheCounciloftheUniversityfromtimetotime:1.3.1.1 reprimandthestudent;1.3.1.2 temporarilyorpermanentlydeprivethestudentofarightorprivilege
whichhisorherregistrationasastudentattheUniversityentails;1.3.1.3 imposeafinenotexceedingtheamountdeterminedfromtimetotime
forthispurposebyCouncil,andalsoorderthestudenttopayanamountwhichamountstotheactualdamagecausedbythestudent;
1.3.1.4 deprivethestudentoftherightorprivilegetoregisterforaparticularmodule,orrevokeacreditobtainedinamodule;
1.3.1.5 compelthestudenttoperformcommunityservicewithintheUniversityforaspecifiednumberofhoursnotexceedingthemaximumdeterminedfromtimetotimebytheCouncilforthispurpose;
1.3.1.6 suspendthestudentforaspecifiedperiod;and/or1.3.1.7 denythestudenttheprivilegeofre-registrationasastudentatthe
University.1.3.2 WhenanappealagainstadecisionoftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)is
lodgedintermsofparagraph1.5,theChairperson,afterconsultingwiththeothermembersoftheCommittee,maysuspendanydisciplinarymeasureimposedbytheCommitteependingtheresultoftheappeal.
1.4 DISCIPLINARYCOMMITTEE(STUDENTS)1.4.1 TheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)consistsofthreemembers.Themembers
appointedtoserveonaspecificcommitteeshallbeappointedfromtheranksofthefollowingcategoriesofpersons:1.4.1.1 apersonwithalegalqualificationfromwithinoroutsidetheUniversity,
appointedbytheRegistrartoactastheChairpersonofthedisciplinaryinvestigation;
1.4.1.2 anacademicstaffmemberoftheUniversity;and1.4.1.3 aregisteredstudentoftheUniversityappointedfromtheranksofthe
servingConstitutionalTribunaljudges.1.4.2 AftertheChairpersonofaspecificdisciplinarycommitteehasbeenappointed
bytheRegistrar,itisthedutyoftheChairpersontoappointtheremainderofthecommitteeinconsultationwiththeRegistrarandinaccordancewiththeabovementioned guidelines.
1.4.3 IftherearenoConstitutionalTribunaljudgesorsuchjudgesareunavailable,thedisciplinaryinvestigationmaylawfullycontinuewithoutarepresentativefromtheranksofthejudgesoftheConstitutionalTribunal.
1.5 APPEALPROCEDURE1.5.1 Astudentmayappealagainsttheconvictionand/orthedisciplinarymeasures
imposedbytheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)inaccordancewiththefollowingprocedure:1.5.1.1 ThestudentmayappealtotheAppealsCommitteeofSenateagainstthe
convictionand/orthedisciplinarymeasuresimposedbytheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)bylodgingawrittenNoticeofAppealtotheRegistrar.

1.5.1.2 ThewrittenNoticeofAppealshallbelodgedwiththeRegistrarnotlaterthantendaysafterthestudenthasbeeninformedinwritingofthefindingoftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students).TheNoticeofAppealshallbeaccompaniedbyanamountnotexceedingR2000(TwoThousandRand)oranotheramountasdeterminedbyCouncilfromtimetotime,whichshallserveaspartpaymentforcostsrelatedtotheappeal:providedthatindeservingcasestheRegistrarmaylowertheamountpayableorwaivethepaymentathis/herdiscretion.
1.5.1.3 ThegroundsofappealmustbefurnishedindetailintheNoticeofAppeal.1.5.1.4 OnreceiptoftheNoticeofAppeal,acopythereofshallbesubmittedto
theChairmanoftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students),whereupontheCommitteeshallpreparearesponsetothegroundsoftheappealwithinareasonabletimeandsubmitittotheRegistrar.
1.5.1.5 TheRegistrarshallprovidethestudentwiththeresponsefurnishedbytheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students),whointurnmaywithinsevendayssubmitawrittenreplicationtotheRegistrar.
1.5.1.6 TheRegistrarshallthenarrangefortheappealtobeheardassoonaspossiblebytheAppealsCommitteeofSenate.
1.5.1.7 TheAppealsCommitteeofSenatemayratify,alterorsetasideanyconvictionand/ordisciplinarymeasureimposed,whichmayincludethesuspensionorreductionoforincreaseindisciplinarymeasures,andmayotherwisemakeanyorderwhich,takingintoaccountthefactsofthecase,wouldbejustandequitable.ShouldtheAppealsCommitteeofSenatesetasidetheconvictionand/ordisciplinarymeasuresimposedbytheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students),orreducethedisciplinarymeasuresimposedonthestudent,theUniversityshallrepaytheamountpaidbythestudentinaccordancewith1.5.1.2.above.
1.5.1.8 TheappealshallbeadjudicatedonthebasisofthedocumentationbeforetheAppealsCommitteeofSenateandnorepresentationonbehalfofanypartyshallbepermittedatthehearingoftheappeal.
1.6 APPEALSCOMMITTEEOFSENATE TheAppealsCommitteeofSenateconsistsof:
1.6.1 theChairpersonofSenateorhisorherdelegate;and1.6.2 twopermanentacademicstaffmembers,oneofwhommustbeaprofessorinthe
FacultyofLaw:ProvidedthatastaffmemberwhohasservedasamemberoftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)inrespectofacertainmatter,maynotserveasamemberoftheAppealsCommitteeofSenateinrespectofthesamematter.
1.7 GENERAL1.7.1 IftheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)and/ortheAppealsCommitteeofSenate
deprivesastudentofarightoraprivilegethatheorsheexercisesasastudent,ortemporarilyorpermanentlydenieshimorherentrancetotheUniversityoraUniversityresidence,suchstudentshallforfeitallclaimstoarefundorreductionoforexemptioninrespectofmoneypaidorpayabletotheUniversity.
1.7.2 Ifastudentrefusestoattendadisciplinaryhearing,orwhereheorshehasbeenabsentfromsuchhearingforasecondtimewithoutthepermissionofChairpersonoftheCommittee,thehearingmaybecontinuedforthwithinhisorherabsenceinamannerwhichtheDisciplinaryCommittee(Students)deemsappropriate.
1.7.3 IftheVice-ChancellorandPrincipalisoftheopinionthatthecircumstancesofaspecificcasewarrantit,heorshemayperformsomeoralloftheactionsperformedbytheRegistrarintermsoftheDisciplinaryCodeor,alternatively,heorshemaydelegatetheauthoritytoperformthesefunctionstoanotherstaffmemberoftheUniversity.

1.7.4 NothinginthisdocumentshallprohibittheCounciloftheUniversityfrompromulgatingspecificdisciplinarycodesandproceduresforregulatingconductinResidencesorinotherunitswithintheUniversitywherethisisnecessitatedbyoperationalrequirements.ThisCodeshallapplyintheabsenceofsuchmeasures.
2. IMPORTANTPROCEDURES,REGULATIONS,RULESANDINSTRUCTIONS Itisrequiredofeachstudenttoacquainthim-orherselfthoroughlywiththeprovisionsofthe
procedures,regulations,rulesandinstructionsoftheUniversitywithregardtothemattershereafter.
NOTE:Inthecaseofcontraventionsignoranceoftheabove-mentionedregulationswillnotbeaccepted as an excuse.
2.1 SEXUALHARASSMENTANDRACIALDISCRIMINATION IntermsofitsCodeofconductonthehandlingofSexualharassmentanditsPolicyon
UnfairDiscriminationonthebasisofRace,theUniversityofPretoriastrivestowardscreatingalivingandstudyenvironmentforeachofitsstudentsthatisnon-sexist,non-racistandnon-discriminatory.
Disciplinarystepscanbetakenagainststudentswhocommitactsofsexualharassmentand/orunfairdiscriminationonthebasisofrace.Uponconviction,suchstudentscanbeexpelled.
SexualharassmentisunwelcomeconductofasexualnaturethatviolatestherightsofastudentandconstitutesabarriertoequitywithintheUniversitycommunity,whileunfairdiscriminationonthebasisofraceimpairsastudent’srighttoanon-discriminatory,non-racialstudyorlivingenvironment.
2.2 EXAMINATIONS,TESTSANDOTHERACADEMICASSIGNMENTS
A. INSTRUCTIONS1. Studentsareobligedtopositivelyidentifythemselveswhenwritingatestand/or
examinationbymeansofavalidstudentcard.2. Nopersonmaypretendtobearegisteredstudentand/orwriteatestand/or
examinationonbehalfofastudent.3. Nostudentmayenterthetestorexaminationvenuelaterthanhalfanhourafter
commencementofatestorexaminationsessionandnostudentmayleavethetestorexaminationvenueearlierthanhalfanhouraftercommencementofatestorexaminationsession.Inthecaseofcomputer-basedassessment,astudentmaynotenterthevenueafterthepunctualcommencementofthetestorexaminationsession.
4. Studentsmustimmediatelyandstrictlyobeyalltheinstructionsgivenbyaninvigilator.5. Exceptfortheconditionsasindicatedinparagraph8,studentsmaynotbringintothe
testorexaminationvenueorhaveintheirpossessionanyunauthorisedapparatus,books,electronicmeansofcommunication,ornotesofanynaturewhatsoeveroranypaper,nomatterhowsmall.Merepossessionofanyoftheaforementioned,irrespectiveofwhetherthestudentactedintentionallyornegligentlyorinnocently,isregardedasaserioustransgressionoftherulesandsubsequentlyasseriousacademicmisconduct.Itremainsthestudent’sresponsibilitytodouble-check,priortothecommencementofatestorexamination,thatnoneoftheaforementioneditemsareinhis/herpossession.
6. Studentsareresponsibleforprovidingtheirownteachingmaterialsandstationeryinaccordancewiththerequirementsandspecificationssetbythelecturerconcerned.Mutualexchangeofsuchitemswillnotbeallowed.
7. Wearingofcapsorwide-brimmedhatsduringexaminationsandtestsisprohibited.

8. Bookbagsandhandbagsmaybekeptwithstudents(ieunderneathchairs)duringtestsandexaminationsprovidedthatthesearenothandledbystudentsatallforthedurationofthetestorexamination.
9. Itisimportantthatthesurname,fullnamesandsignatureofthestudentareprovidedintherelevantspaceonthetestandexaminationanswerscript.Ifsopreferredbythestudent,thisinformationmaybetreatedasconfidentialbyfoldingandsealingthetopportionoftheexaminationandtestanswerscript.Thecoveredportionmayonlybeopenedbytheexaminerifthestudentnumberisincorrectorillegible.
10. Oncetheinvigilatorhasannouncedthecommencementofthetestorexamination,allconversationoranyotherformofcommunicationbetweenstudentsmustcease.Duringthecourseofthetestorexaminationnocommunicationofanynaturewhatsoevermaytakeplacebetweenstudents.
11. Nostudentmayassistorattempttoassistanotherstudent,orobtainhelp,orattempttoobtainhelpfromanotherstudentduringatestorexamination.
12. Studentsmaynotactinadishonestwaywithregardtoanytestorexaminationassessment,aswellaswithregardtothecompletionand/orsubmissionofanyotheracademictaskorassignment.Dishonestconductincludes,butisnotlimitedto,plagiarism,aswellasthesubmissionofworkbyastudentwithaviewtoassessmentwhentheworkinquestionis,withtheexceptionofgroupworkasdeterminedbythelecturerconcerned,theworkofsomeoneelseeitherinfullorinpart,orwheretheworkistheresultofcollusionbetweenthestudentandanotherpersonorpersons.
13. Writingonanypaperotherthanthatprovidedfortestorexaminationpurposesisstrictlyprohibited.Studentsmayalsonotwriteonthetestorexaminationpaper,exceptinthecaseoffill-inandmultiple-choicequestionpapers.
14. Roughworkshouldbedoneinthetestorexaminationanswerscriptandthencrossedout.Nopagesmayberemovedfromthetestorexaminationanswerscript.
15. Smokingisnotpermittedinthetestorexaminationvenue,andstudentswillalsonotbepermittedtoleavethevenueduringthetestorexaminationforthispurpose.
16. Onlyinexceptionalcircumstanceswillastudentbegivenpermissiontoleavethetestorexaminationvenuetemporarily,andthenonlyunderthesupervisionofaninvigilator.
17. Studentsmaynottakeusedorunusedanswerscriptsfromthetestorexaminationvenue.
18. Assoonastheinvigilatorannouncesduringatestorexaminationthatthetimehasexpired,studentsshouldstopwritingimmediately.Inthecaseofcomputer-basedassessmentstudentsshouldstopworkingonthecomputerassoonasthelogintimehasexpired.
PLEASENOTE:Studentsshouldtakenotethat,iffoundguiltyofacademicmisconductornon-compliancewiththeserules,astudentcould,amongstothers,forfeithis/hercreditsforamoduleand/orbesuspendedfromtheUniversityforaperiodthatcouldrangefromoneyeartopermanentsuspension.Suchstudent’srecordwillbeblockedfortheperiodofsuspensionandhe/shewillnotbeentitledtoacertificateofgoodconductfromtheUniversityduringthisperiod.Studentsshouldalsotakenotethat,iffoundguiltyofacademicmisconduct,itmaynegativelyinfluencetheiradmissiontootheruniversitiesand/orregistrationwithprofessionalcouncils.AcademicmisconductisindicatedinallcertificatesofconductprovidedtostudentsbytheUniversity.
