Warm-Up March 3Explain how humidity

change with temperature?

The higher the temperature, the higher the humidity . . . warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air.

MYP Unit Question: What should I wear today?

Area of Interaction: Environment

Learner Profile: Communicator

Standard: Understand how the distribution of land and oceans affect climate and weather.

• Learning Standard: Today I’m learning about clouds because they form as a result of weather.

• Opening: Cloudiest place on Earth

• Work Session:Cloud Formation & Types PresentationCloud Worksheet

• Closing: Cloud Review

Where is the cloudiest place on Earth?

Ben Nevis in Fort William, Scotland

Opening:

Temperature: 38˚

Wind Chill: 38˚

Visibility: 7 mi

Humidity: 87%

Wind Speed: 3 mi S

What would you wear?

• Remnant of an ancient volcano• Highest mountain in Scotland

– 4409 feet from sea level• Maritime Sea breeze creates a chilling wind between 20-30 knots/hour• Fog is present on the mountain 80% of the time

What do all these events have in common?

Clouds

Cloud Formation• Clouds form when water vapor in

the air condenses• Water molecule attaches itself to

a particle of dust (condensation nuclei)

How does water vapor get into the air?

Where does the cloud nuclei come from?

Volcanoes, pollution, cars, sea spray from the ocean, and fires

• In 1802 an Englishman by the name of Luke Howard invented the cloud naming system

• Latin names to describe clouds. • The first part of a cloud's name describes

height, the second part shape.

Why do clouds have such unusual names?

How can air pollution

affect weather? The more pollutants in the air, the more

things the water molecules can attachto, the more it might precipitate.

The prefixes denoting

Heights• Cirro high clouds above 20,000 feet

• Alto and mid level clouds between 6,000 - 20,000 feet

• There is no prefix for low level clouds.

• Cirrus mean curly or fibrous

• Stratus means layered

• Cumulus means lumpy or piled • Nimbo or nimbus indicates that a cloud can

produce precipitation.

Shapes

• Given that information, describe what each of the following clouds would look and act like?

• Cumulonimbus

• Nimbostratus

• Cirrocumulus

• Altostratus

Lumpy or piled up + precip.

Precipitation + layered

High + Curly

Mid-level + layered

• the highest of all clouds• 50,000 feet (15,000 meters). • distinctive anvil-top shapes occur because of high winds

• associated with severe storms• form when warm, humid air cools enough that water vapor condenses around tiny particles to form water droplets or ice crystals.

• The summit of Washington's Mount Rainier • formed by high winds blowing over rough terrain • sometimes described as a "stack of pancakes."
