Financial modelling is a key analytical tool used to aid
understanding and decision making in areas of planning,
investment analysis, valuation and strategy. LSBF Executive
Education offers a suite of financial modelling short courses
to allow professionals to gain practical skills and attain best
techniques and methodologies by applying them to different
scenarios. These courses will give attendees the confidence and
ability to develop sophisticated financial models.
introduction to Financial modelling with Excel This three day course covers all of the essential points to allow you to use Excel for financial modelling efficiently and effectively. It shows you how to alter Excel’s defaults to best suit the task in hand and goes through current ‘best practice’ techniques, explaining the reason behind them and the benefits of using them.
• Build a model that follows current ‘best practice’ techniques
and is also simple, logical and powerful
• Know how to set a spreadsheet’s default values to those
most appropriate for a financial model
• Appreciate the difference between copy/paste and cut/paste
and how to use these with absolute referencing to write
similar blocks of calculation quickly and easily
• Demonstrate a full understanding of Excel’s =IF function and
knowledge of Excel’s other logical functions
• Round numbers up, down, to the nearest whole number or
to the nearest five
• Know the best way of adding scenarios to a model and using
Excel’s text functions to label each scenario clearly
Advanced Financial modelling This three day course develops your financial modelling skills, teaching you how to build an integrated income statement, balance sheet and cash flow for a single company, following current ‘best practice’ techniques. You will also learn how to build models that contain no errors and be shown how to locate and correct any errors that may be present in a model.
• Calculate the cash balance and produce an accurate figure
for the interest without using circular references
• Learn how to use Excel’s text functions to echo input
data, such as sensitivity analysis adjustments in the text
descriptions of a calculation
• See how to use Excel’s data tables to show how the overall
value of a company is affected by changes to any of the
27
input data values and how these changes can be presented
graphically
• Discover how to locate any errors within a spreadsheet
model so that they can be corrected
Advanced company Analysis, valuation and Financial modelling This five day course looks at the most generally used company
analysis techniques, teaching you how to calculate each figure
and interpret the results.
• Calculate the ratios used to assess the performance of a
company relative to its peers
• Interpret the meaning of those ratios
• Use ratios to value a company
• Build a financial model and use it to forecast results
• Calculate a discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation and
compare it to the ratios valuation
• Add a surplus cash waterfall to model accelerated
loan repayments
• Extend their models to include a leveraged buyout
(LBO) valuation
• Compare the LBO valuation to the DCF valuation and the
ratios valuation
• Use Excel as an efficient tool for further analysis
and valuations
Advanced Financial Forecasting and modelling This five day course builds on the most commonly used
DCF valuation techniques The course will show you how to
calculate the weighted average cost of capital and use it as the
appropriate discount rate in your DCF valuation. The course
also covers modelling the refinancing of a company, adding
the extra debt instruments that may be used. You are shown
how to incorporate both scheduled debt repayments and
accelerated repayments, which are made when a company
generates surplus cash.
• Produce advanced DCF valuation that is more accurate
and reliable
• Calculate the WACC figure in each year of the model’s
forecast and use it to discount that year’s cash flow
• Model the effects of refinancing a company
• Add the option of making accelerated repayments of
loans, in addition to the scheduled repayments, by using a
‘cash waterfall’
• Use switches to activate or deactivate the
accelerated repayments
Lbo Financial modelling This five day course covers leverage buy out modelling and
compares this with discounted cash flow techniques. Before the
LBO modelling can take place, you need to prepare your model
for refinancing by incorporating two extra debt instruments. The
course will also introduce participants to Excel’s solver and to
graphical methods of finding the maximum debt.
• Write an LBO model that calculates the LBO value of a
company
• Compare an LBO valuation to a DCF valuation and explain
the differences
• Gain a deeper understanding of private equity transactions,
the types of models used, and their structure
• Learn how to translate key financial and commercial aspects
into Excel
• Model debts with both scheduled and accelerated
repayments

project finance models that follow all the current best practice
procedures, giving you models that are integrated and
comprehensive whilst still being accurate and easy to use and
maintain. The course will also focus on using debt for funding
the whole project and the covenants that banks are likely to put
on any loans they provide.
Modelling uncertainty, particularly the uncertainty of the length
of construction for a project, will also be explored during
the course.
You will learn how to:
• Build a project finance model, including construction
and operating phases
• Model debts with both scheduled
and accelerated repayments
