QUESTION THREEWhat kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
TOP MEDIA INSTITUTIONS
IPC MEDIA(International Publishing Corporation)
•Consumer magazine and Digital Publisher in the UK with a large portfolio
•Over 350 million copies sold each year
•One of the UK's largest publishers targets over 26 million UK adults
•Three magazine divisions: Connect- mass market women, SouthBank (affluent women) and Inspire (Men)
•Publishes popular music magazine NME
BAUER MEDIA•Multinational Media Corporation
•Headquarters in Germany
•15 Countries Worldwide
•Privately owned and managed- Founded by the Bauer family in 1875
•Publishes two of the biggest music magazines Q and Kerrang
•50% stake in British Televison Company Box Television
•Annual turnover of over 2 billion euros (2010)
BOOM MAGAZINEIn my opinion I think that the multinational publishing
company Bauer media would be most suitable for publishing Boom magazine, because it is already
renowned for publishing other leading music magazines, like Q and Kerrang. The style of Boom is similar to Q magazine, because Q also reflects a professional and
sophisticated style, whilst managing to appeal to young adults, like Boom magazine. Bauer media group has a 50%
stake in box television, which produces music television channels, such as 4Music and Smash Hits, therefore Boom
could become involved with these music channels by reaching out to the target audience on a larger scale to
promote the magazine and boost its publicity.
ADVERTISINGAdvertising is fundamental for music magazines, because a lot of the
money is made through advertising brands and products. The advertisements relate to the genre and target audience of the magazine.
The target audience for Boom magazine are young adults and it is a dance music magazine, so some of the brands being advertised may
include brands like Apple, hmv, Smirnoff and Fiat to name a few.
APPS AND ONLINE PRESENCE
Taking into consideration the genre and target audience, I think that it is necessary for the magazine to have an online presence.
For example, its own website would be useful so that regular readers could keep up to date with the latest gossip, music, photos,
interviews etc. and it could also update readers via social networking, such as having a facebook page, twitter profile,
instagram account and even its own youtube channel. These are all good ways to keep the readers engaged and interested,
connecting them on a more personal level, as well as broadening the target audience. I think that it would be beneficial to have apps
available electronically on smart phones, so that readers can access the app at any time whenever and wherever they are.
