To get the most out of today:• Keep an open mind

• Scenarios aren’t predictions, but descriptions of plausible alternative futures. You’ll learn more by exploring them and asking “what if?” questions than by ruling out possibilities.

• Be adventurous• The workshop is a place to play with and explore what might

happen in the future. We invite you to dive and experience what it might be like.

• Share in the creative commons• Share insights you are comfortable with giving to others; this is

about collaborative learning and idea creation.

1 | Significant objects

Describe the object you have brought to a partner.

What is it? What does it represent?Identify three key words that describe the

importance of the object.Write the three words on a tag and attach it to

your object.

Citizen driven innovationWe believe citizen innovators have an important part to

play in creating change towards a sustainable future

Airbnb | 2008

Landshare | 2008• Connecting

growers with people with land to share

• Sharing gardening knowledge, recipes, resources online.

BoKlok | 1997• An affordable housing

concept jointly developed by Ikea and Skanska.

• Co-created blocks of flats and terraced houses for low- and middle-income people, involving community design input.

• Maximise small living spaces through smart design and communal recreation areas.

Citizen innovation:• Offer is shaped by citizens / users• Promotes and enables sustainable lifestyles and

behaviour• Can range from small to large• May be driven by corporations or small

entrepreneurs.

The future will look different

Scenarios• Scenarios are plausible, coherent and

challenging descriptions of possible future worlds.

• They are predictions, not forecasts• Scenarios help us to explore what might happen

in the future, anticipate key uncertainties, be better prepared to mitigate risks and seize opportunities presented by a changing world.

Individualistic culture

Four very different worlds… but

• share the same ‘boundaries’ for society• reduce the amount of resources we’re

consuming per person per year toa quarter of what it is today

• Global• Competitive• Data driven and

personalised• Status through

learning

• Wikidecomcracy• Peer Networks• Collaborative interest

groups• Digital, virtual living• Open data, open source

• Local loops framework encouraged by EU

• The Guild Economy• Sharing and

collaboration between regions

.

• Absence of global financial and political systems

• Empathy guides everything• Community based• Scarcity

4 | Travelling forwards

Explore pathways to each of the four sustainable worlds in 2050

Which world are you most curious to find out about?

Stand next to the gift box you most want to open

4 | Travelling forwards

Share your initial thoughts on what attracted you to this world.

How is it different to today?Consider whether the three key words that

matter to you exist in that scenario – and how you feel about that.

5 | In 2050

1. What would be your hopes and fears if you lived in this world?

2. What sort of lifestyle would you have?3. Where do innovations come from in this

world?

6 | Travelling back

Along the way, you meet someone who is a citizen innovator.

Who are they? What are they doing? What are their motivations, ambitions and

challenges?
