Scenes from the King's Road

Estimated Value: £500 Number: 30 Photographer: Harold Chapman

Chelsea Pensioners. The picture of the bearded Chelsea Pensioner rushing across the zebra crossing clutching an attaché case, was the favourite picture of Anne Anable's of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that I had taken of the King's Road, and was pinned up in her office of the newspaper in Cleveland, USA

I knew fashion model Kelly from the catwalks in Paris. One Saturday afternoon, I saw her rushing to catch a Mercedes taxi. This picture was used many years later in a Mercedes advertisement.

Model dressed in fashion designer Tommy Roberts' "Mr Freedom" outfits. Some years later, on visiting a viticulteur’s house in St-Guiraud in the Midi, France, much to my amazement I saw a copy of the print pinned up on the wall. On staring at it, Madame Incarnacion Sauvagnac insisted that this was "the other Mrs Chapman".

Girl in a short fur coat with a large dog on the ice and slush. Shortly after taking this picture, I had a rendez-vous with Anne Anable of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, in the King's Road. She found me standing up to my ankles in a pool of melted slush in the gutter. I had become so interested in taking the pictures that 1 hadn't noticed that my shoes and socks were totally soaked and ruined. She insisted that I go to the nearest shoe shop to buy a new pair of shoes and also a new pair of socks before we both carried on working.

Faades. While photographing a man just looking into the window of "Just Looking", a male voice whispered in my ear, Give us a kiss. Startled, I turned round and it was the journalist John Robelis whom I used to work with for a time at the "Fleet Street News Service", which had an office in Bell Lane off Fleet Street.

In side Antiquarius, the so-called antique market. When working the King's Road, I used to drop in to Antiquarius where Cyclops Lester had an antique book stall. He used to live in the Beat Hotel, rue Git-le-Cceur, Paris.
