Esters (p. 15)

Organic compound formed by the condensation reaction of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol.

O O R-C-OH + R-OH R-C-O-R’ + H2O

(ester)

Esters (p. 15) O R-C-O-R’

Naming: Parent chain “R” (including the C bonded to the

oxygens) Name the parent as an alkane Take off the “e”. Add –oate

Branches Identify alkyl group, R’Add alkyl name in front of parent chain.

Example O

C-C-O-C-C-CParent: ethane

ethanoate  Branch: propylFinal name: propyl ethanoate

Example OC-C-C-C-O-C-C-

Parent: butane butanoate

 Branch: ethylFinal name: ethyl butanoate

Draw: pentyl hexanoate OC-C-C-C-C-C-O-C-C-C-C-C

Name: O

C-O-C-C-CParent: propane

propanoate  Branch: methylFinal name: methyl propanoate

Amines (p. 17)Organic compounds that are derivatives of

ammonia (NH3 ).

R-N-R” R’

Naming: Name the branches (R, R’, R”) in

alphabetical order; they can also be halogens.

Add the word amine at the end.

Primary amine(1 hydrogen is replaced by an alkyl group)

C-N-H H

methyl amine

Secondary amine(2 hydrogens are replaced by alkyl groups)

C-N-C-C H

ethyl methyl amine

Tertiary amine(3 hydrogens are replaced by alkyl groups)

C-N-C-C C-C-C

ethyl methyl propyl amine

Draw: pentyl propyl amine
