The incidence of environmental disasters around theworld continues to increase, as does the lossesresulting from them. The impact of environmentaldisasters affects individuals, communities, economies, and the environment. As stated by the United NationsEnvironment Programme, these disasters have thepotential to “destroy infrastructure, displacepopulations, and fundamentally undermine humansecurity. They also compound poverty and tear apartthe fabric of sustainable development”.

Significant occurrences of environmental disasters inNorth America will be discussed in this presentation toexamine the awareness and preparedness forappropriate response, but more importantly, the needto adapt in order to ensure an appropriate response.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, northe most intelligent, but the one most responsive tochange.”― Leon C. Megginson
