Table tennis

Table tennis is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth with rackets.

The game originated as a sport in Britain during the 1800s, where it was played amongst the upper-class as an after dinner entertainment activity

Chinese players have won the men's World Championship 60% of the time since 1959; in the women's competition, Chinese players have won all but two of the World Championships since 1971. At the 2008 Olympics, China won all possible medals.

Badminton Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two

opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net.

The beginnings of Badminton can be traced to mid-18th century British India.

Since 1992, badminton has been an Olympic sport with five events. It is also a technical sport, requiring good motor coordination and the development of sophisticated racquet

movements.

Football

The various codes of football share the following elements in common:

Two teams of usually between 11 and 18 players; some variations that have fewer players (five or more per team) are also popular.

A clearly defined area in which to play the game. Scoring goals or points, by moving the ball to an opposing

team's end of the field and either into a goal area, or over a line.

Goals or points resulting from players putting the ball

between two goalposts.

Modern balls In Europe, early footballs were made out of animal

bladders, more specifically pig's bladders, which were inflated. Later leather coverings were introduced to allow the ball to keep their shape.

In 1855, the U.S. inventor Charles Goodyear — who had patented vulcanized rubber — exhibited a spherical football, with an exterior of vulcanized rubber panels, at the Paris Exhibition. The ball was to prove popular in early

forms of football in the U.S.A.

Early college basketball development On February 9, 1895, the first intercollegiate 5-on-5 game was played

at Hamline University between Hamline and the School of Agriculture, which was affiliated with University of Minnesota. The School of Agriculture won in a 9–3 game.

Dr. James Naismith was instrumental in establishing college basketball. He coached at the University of Kansas for six years, before handing the reins to renowned coach Forrest "Phog" Allen.

In 1901, colleges, including the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, the University of Minnesota, the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Utah and Yale University began sponsoring men's games.

In 1905, frequent injuries on the football field prompted President Theodore Roosevelt to suggest that colleges form a governing body, resulting in the creation of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS).

In 1910, that body would change its name to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Women's Basketball

Women's basketball began in 1892 at Smith College when Senda Berenson, a physical education teacher, modified Naismith's rules for women. Shortly after she was hired at Smith, she went to Naismith to learn more about the game. Fascinated by the new sport and the values it could teach, she organized the first women’s collegiate basketball game on March 21, 1893, when her Smith freshmen and sophomores played against one another. Her rules were first published in 1899 and two years later Berenson became the editor of A.G. Spalding’s first Women's Basketball Guide.

Films are cultural artifacts created by specific

cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue.

The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term cinema is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies.
