Governance Definitions
Levels of Governance within the Enterprise [as defined in TOGAF 9]
IT Governance [King III] • "IT governance can be considered as a framework that supports effective and efficient
management of IT resources to facilitate the achievement of a company’s strategic objectives. Architecture Governance [TOGAF 9] • “The practice and orientation by which enterprise architectures and other architectures are
managed and controlled at an enterprise-wide level.” IT Governance: The “what”, “who”, and “how” controls needed to achieve IT objectives [me] • Identify what needs to be controlled: IT domains that require decision making (eg IT
investments, architecture, development, etc.) • Identify who must control: People accountable for investments, architecture, etc. decisions • Define how to execute: Policies and procedures (processes) to control execution of
investments, architecture, etc.
The overall objective is to achieve the company’s strategy (why) • Get the right people to do the right thing at the right time in the right way

Final thoughts on changing your organisation…
"And it ought to be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. Because the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new.“
- Nicolo Machiavelli c 1505
