Long tradition of consumption of dairy products but...

Consumption of dairy about 19 kg per capita per year; WHO recommendation: 175 kgGrowth of milk production equals population growthImports of dairy products are increasing: 300% increase in value between 2001 -2008Small portion of milk production reaches the formal market (about 2%)

What is needed for sustainable dairy development? (1)

1) Good economic prospects for chain actors

Production: Low cost price requires: reliable market; attractive price; more & better feed; more & better animals; input supply & services; management skills

Efficient collection, processing & marketing: quality control, product diversification; promotion of consumption

Requirements / challenges for sustainable dairy development (2)

2) Good enabling environment

government policies - level of protection, clarity on direction (vision)

support from research, education and extensioncoordination in value chain

1 (economic prospects) + 2 (enabling environment) = good business prospects

Why this workshop?

Government institutions, development organizations (donor supported, NGO’s) and private sector work on challenges facing dairy development

Growing number of private sector initiatives in the fields of input supply, production and processing

Need for exchange of experiences, coordination and how to proceed

Purpose of this workshop

To bring together stakeholders in the dairy sector to: Share experiences/ lessons learnt among

different stakeholders , Identify key challenges, opportunities and

possible interventions including setting priorities

Recommend options to achieve coherent regional and national dairy development policies, sustainable institutional set-ups and capacity building strategies
