VOCATIONAL TRAINING FORPOORYOUTHSManyCambodianyouthsdropoutofschoolbecause of poverty. They usually live atsubsistence levels by working in the fields;quite a few of them have been driven todelinquencyanddrugs.

PKH works at transforming the lives ofpoor young men and women between theages of 17 to 23 years. This is done byequipping them with vocational skills.Traineesareprovidedwithlodging,foodandvocational training at the PKH Centres, freeofcharge.

HospitalitySkillsTourism has been on the increase inCambodiaandPKHhaschosentogivesuchyouths a hope and future, by equippingthem with skills to work in the hotel cumtourism industry. The 2-year programmecomprises an intensive course in the firstyeartoenabletheyouthstoread,writeandspeakEnglish,aswellastousethecomputer.

A team of expatriatetrainers conducts thet r a i n i n g . T h i s i sfollowedbya3-monthindustryattachment inthehotels.

In recentyears,allof theseyouthshavegained employment in the tourist hubs ofPhnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville.They work in the departments of Food andBeverage,HousekeepingandtheFrontOfficeofthehotels.

IndustrialSkillsTheIndustrialSkillsCourseisfor1yearanditequips young menwith the technicalk n o w - h o w f o rconstruction worksa n d b u i l d i n gmaintenance.Theskillstaught include basiccarpentry, brick-laying,plumbing, welding,electrical works, andthe installation andmaintenance of air-conditioners. They enable men to seeke m p l oy m e nt i n t h e m a i nte n a n c edepartments of hotels, construction andengineeringfirms.

Withjobs,theseyoungpeopleareable to support themselves andalso provide for their families intheprovinces.Theyhaveachancetobreakoutofthepovertycycle.

AoralisaplacewithoneofthelowestliteracyratesinCambodia.Manychildrendonotgotoschoolastheirparentscannotaffordthecostofeducation. Furthermore, theschools in this remote districtlack trained teachers andeducationalfacilities.PKH works to ‘reach theunreached’bybringingliteracytotheminoritycommunitiesofthetribalSuoypeoplelivinginTropengChouCommune.

It does this by providing education for 300childrenfromthevillagesofChomBok,Trang,KordountheiandTanil.

These children attend classesat Chom Bok Primary School,as well as before-after schoolsessions at the PKH Centre inTrang; this is where theyreceived their meals everyschoolday,English tuitionandlessonsfromGod’sWord.

PastoralGuidanceforYouthsAspartoftheoveralldevelopmentoftheyouthsat the PKH Centre, recreational activities andChristian pastoral guidance are also offeredduring the weekends. These activities andsessions are organised by the Living StreamsYouth Club. The Club aims at improving thesocial fabric of the community by building thelivesandcharacterofyouths.ThereareyouthswhohavecometopersonalfaithinJesusChrist;they have had their lives transformed by thepowerofGod’slove.

CHILDCARE FOR ORPHANS ANDDISADVANTAGEDCHILDRENSeedsofHopeChildcareisPKH’sjointeffortwithanother organisation, Full Gospel AssemblyCambodia(FGAC)tocarefor90poorandneedychildrenfrom6to18yearsofage.Since2001,PKH annually supports a third of thesedisadvantagedchildren.The childrenareprovidedwitha safehomeattheFGACCentre/Orphanageandwithprimaryand secondary education at the nearby HopeSchool.Over theyears,manyof these childrenhavegrownupwell,withasignificantnumberofthem pursuing higher education in theuniversitiesinPhnomPenh.

ENGLISHTUITIONLessonsareconducteddailyfor100studentsatthePKHEnglishSchool;theyaretaughttospeak,read and write English. A good command ofEnglish affords these young people greateropportunityforfurtheracademicandvocationaltraining,aswellasanadvantageinapplyingforjobs.

COMMUNITYHELPWelfare aid in the form of rations or rice, oil,b l a n k e t s , s o a p ,mosquito nets, clothingand medicines aredistributed to poorvillagers suffering theeffects of droughts andfloods. PKH also bringsaid to communities byembarking on smallscaleprojectstoprovidewellsandsolar-poweredlighting.Basichealthcareis provided to the students at PKH and theCommunityaroundPKH.
