English Discoveries Magazine: Pedagogical Guidelines
Introduction The aim of the English Discoveries magazine is to help
learners become autonomous readers. The magazine provides relevant
and current articles especially written in language suitable for
the learners’ level: basic, intermediate and advanced.
It is updated monthly with at least three articles from a variety
of general topics. A large archive of past articles is available,
organized both according to the magazine issue and the topic.
English Discoveries magazine provides learners with an opportunity
to practice reading skills with authentic data. By blending the
magazine with classroom work, the learners’ experience with reading
online articles will be further enhanced.
Using the Pre and Post Reading Questions In order to enhance
student’s learning experience, the magazine articles are
accompanied by pre and post reading questions. These questions are
intended to aid comprehension and also encourage students to take
control of their own learning. The inclusion of pre-reading and
post-reading questions provide added value to the magazine and free
teachers to take advantage of other aspects.
Each magazine article is preceded by pre-reading questions that are
designed to prepare learners for reading and raise their
expectations about the text. This step is essential in helping
learners become familiar with the contents of the article by
drawing on their prior knowledge. We recommend that teachers use
these questions as a warm-up activity either in pairs or with the
whole class. Learners have a chance to share information or
opinions and gain considerable background before reading the
article. This step will naturally also present and activate the
vocabulary needed and facilitate autonomous reading.
The multiple-choice post-reading questions are intended to
facilitate the reading of the text. Teachers can guide the learners
to use the post-reading questions in a variety of ways:
o Learners read the questions before reading the text in order to
get a general picture of the information in the text.

o Learners read the text and answer the questions to help them
focus on the important information/features of the text.
o Learners read the text and answer the questions to check their
comprehension.
Students can check their answers and also click to see the actual
answer to make sure that they have understood.
Using the Glossary/ Bi-lingual Dictionary Since the articles are
all based on authentic and current texts, the content and the
vocabulary are challenging, so a glossary has been provided to aid
learners with unfamiliar vocabulary. Unfamiliar words and
expressions that are essential for understanding the text and
cannot be guessed from context are usually glossed.
Learners should use the glossary judiciously. We recommend that
teachers encourage them to read the text by trying to guess
unfamiliar words and by ignoring words that are not necessary for
comprehension. This will build their confidence as readers.
The glossary can also be used as a pre-reading tool. Learners can
try to predict the contents of the article based on the glossed
words.
A bi-lingual students’ dictionary is also available for students to
check a word or expression which does not appear in the
glossary.
Using the Current Issue The current issue of the magazine opens
automatically to the learner’s assigned level. Learners will have
access to all levels, however, so they can read the article at the
level they prefer. A learner may choose to do the first reading of
the text at a lower level, and the second reading at a higher
level.

The current issue has three articles. The first article is the main
article. However, we recommend that learners browse down the page
of each issue and discover the contents.
There are a variety of ways we recommend teachers use each current
issue:
o Teachers may wish to assign the main article to the whole class
and utilize it for extensive/close reading. The class can discuss
the pre-reading questions and teachers can present vocabulary
needed to understand the text. The article can be read in the
computer room or assigned as homework. The follow-up classroom
lesson should focus on comparing reading strategies (scanning,
skimming, using context clues), answering probing information
questions and eliciting the learners’ personal opinions about the
topic/ article.
o Teachers can have learners choose one of the articles to read.
Learners can then use the information they accessed to prepare one
of the following activities:
o Write 3-5 new questions about the text that other learners will
answer.
o Summarize the text. o Write a cloze passage, eliminating nouns,
verbs, adjectives, etc. that
other learners will fill in. o Prepare a crossword puzzle using
vocabulary from the text. o Enter a response in the Forum.
o Assign a jigsaw reading. Different groups read one of the
articles online and later in the classroom form new groups in which
learners report on the article to other learners. This provides an
excellent opportunity to have learners use the information they
read about in an oral activity.
Using the Previous Issues and Topics (Archives) This feature
provides teachers with resources for many classroom
activities:
o Guided Discussions – Use the archives as a basis for
communicative oral activities. Teachers can prepare information gap
activities about specific topics using articles have shared
information.
o Debates – Learners can be sent to the archives to search for
information related to debatable topics; i.e. cloning, computer
games, etc.
o General Extension and Enrichment - Have students research a
particular section which is connected to a topic they are learning
about in class or on the

computer. For instance, if they are studying inventions, then
teachers could ask them to browse the articles in the Science and
Technology section and choose the best invention that is mentioned
there.
o Project Work – Learners will find information regarding most
topics and can easily search for data related to the topic. The
fact that the articles are presented at the level of learners’
ability facilitates the research needed for the project.
o Writing Assignments – Learners can practice various writing
skills; i.e. summarizing, comparing and contrasting, expressing
opinions based on the articles. The articles also can serve as a
model for expository writing.
Magazine Topics o World o Business o Science and Technology o
Environment o Lifestyle o Arts and Entertainment o Sport o Health o
General Interest o Education

Using the Magazine Enrichment Feature
Most units in English Discoveries Basic 1 - Advanced 3 now have a
selection of magazine articles related to the topic of the unit.
When students reach the end of a unit, you may refer them to the
suggested articles. This is an opportunity to provide further
reading for students.
The Magazine Enrichment articles expand on the topics of the units,
providing students with additional information, vocabulary, and
opportunities for discussion. Teachers can use these articles in a
variety of ways, as described in the sections above. The articles
offer interesting and enjoyable reading opportunities for students
at all levels.
The Magazine Enrichment articles can be accessed through the lesson
menu. A link will automatically take students to the article at the
level at which they’re studying. Students will, however, have
access to all levels, as well as to the other magazine features –
the glossary and comprehension questions – normally accessed via
the Community site.
Below, you’ll find a map of the articles at each level, according
to unit. You can refer to this map when planning future
lessons.
