What will the course involve?

EnglishLanguageisapopularALevelappealingtostudentsbecauseitexaminestextsintherealworldsuchasadvertsandnewspaperarticles.IntheASyear,youwilllearnhowtoanalyselanguageexploringarangeoftextsfromfamousbiographiestopersonalletters.Theemphasisisonunderstandinghowandwhylanguageisusedinspecificwaysanddevelopingknowledgeofkeyframeworkswhichwillhelpyoudiscusstextsindepth.Youwillalsolearnaboutthedifferencesbetweenspeechandwriting.

TheASyearwillhelpyoudevelopasawriter,practisinggenressuchasmonologues,whereyouwillcreateafictionalvoice.Youwillalsolearntocommentonyourownworkandexplainyourlinguisticchoices.

AtA2,youwillcontinuetodevelopyourunderstandingofkeyframeworksaswellasstudyingthedevelopmentofEnglishLanguageovertime.Thistopiccovers

historical,socialandculturalaspectsaswellasexaminingcurrentattitudestowardstheeffectsofnewtechnology(textandemail)andEnglishbecomingagloballanguage.Thereismorefocusonspokenlanguage.Youwillanalysetranscriptsfrombroadcastingincludingtelevisionandradio.Thestudyofhowchildrenacquirespeechwillalsobecovered.

Incourseworkmodules,youwillalsodevelopyourwritingandresearchskills.Thereistheopportunitytopursueyourowninterestswhichcouldincludetravelwriting,arevieworanyaspectofJournalism.

How will I be assessed?

InbothASandA2yearsyouwillsitoneexam(worth60%)andhandinafolderofcoursework(worth40%).Studentswillbeexpectedtocompletedraftsoftheircourseworktoensurethatonlytheirbestworkispresentedforassessment.

Lewis’ PerspectiveCarmelCollegeisafantasticcommunitytobeinvolvedin,asitoffersalotmorefreedomthanmypreviousschool,butatthesametimeconstantlysuppliesuswithchallengingworkthatpromptsustoachieveandexceedourpredictedtargetgrade.MyEnglishLiteraturelessonsarealwayswellpreparedandareconstantlyincreasingmyknowledgeofwritingandthelessonsarekeptfunandenjoyablebyourtutor.IalsoenjoyEnglishLiteratureasitallowsyoutoexplorewritinginmuchmoredepththanitdidatGCSE,aswellasallowingpersonalinterpretationandanalysisofthetexts,sharingideasingroupdiscussions.IamconsideringdoingEnglishatuniversitybutamnotsure,sowillbeattendingmanyopendays;Carmeloffersalotofhelpandadviceforstudentswhoareyettomaketheirmindupabouttheirfuturecareer,likeme.

What will the course involve?

Ifyouenjoyreading,thinkingandanalysing,thenEnglishLiteratureisagreatchoice.Thiscourseprovidesyouwiththeopportunitytoreadarangeoftextsfromdifferentperiods.Inthefirstyearyouwillexploretwonovelsandtheselectedworkoftwopoets,evaluatingandinterpretinghowwritersusenarrativetechniquessuchascharacterisationorvoicetoengagetheiraudiencesandconveycontextualaspectssuchassocialcorruption.

Courseworkisalargeelementofthecourseencompassing40%oftheASyear.Forthisyouwillstudytwoplaysinvestigatinghowplaywrightscreatecomedydramas.Withinthistherewillbetheoptiontotryyourhandatsomecreativewriting,producingyourowndramaticmonologueincharacter.

Thesecondyeariscentredonexploringelementsofthegothicinliterature.Oncemoreyouwillhavetheopportunitytostudyarangeofinterestingtextsandyouwillalsolearntoconsiderandinterprettextsfromdifferingcriticalperspectives.

Inlessonsthereisastrongfocusonwholeclass,pairandgroupdiscussionwhereyourownideaswillbewelcomedandvalued.ThroughthestudyofEnglish

Literatureyouwilldevelopexcellentskillsofindependentinterpretationandanalysis,beneficialtofurtheracademicstudy.

ThereareseventutorsintheEnglishDepartmentallofwhomteachthewholerangeofcourses.Thereisanexcellentlibrarycontainingbothtraditionaltexts,butalsotheverybestofcontemporarywriting.TheDepartmenthasa‘bookofthemonth’programmegivingstudentstheopportunitytoenjoythelatestpublications.WehavecomprehensiveITfacilitiesinthecollegeandtheEnglishDepartmentsubscribestoarangeofmagazinesandon-lineresourcessuchasPro-QuestandtheOxfordEnglishDictionary.
